muscle twitches

I've seen the comments on here to consider muscle twitches, but what if it becomes a continual problem >i.e in the calves & ankle region of both legs, & this, after years of sustaining violent spasms...excruciating,  (physical activity seems to initiate (during the rest period afterward)
as I get older, it's become more difficult to suffer  & fight them off...there's been rare occasion that I would
weaken to the point I couldn't walk unassisted,  I gave up in seeking professional assistance, when answers
were not provided. also, often I wake, & struggle to breathe in, sometimes  it takes a few seconds before I
can even gasp my breath in. these worsens over time  Neurontin & Klonapin help some >  do muscle twitches
"show up in an EMG test? is that what the test is used for?

Thank you for your question. Although without being able to examine you I can not offer you the specific advice on diagnosis and treatment that you need, but I would try to provide you some relevant information about your health concern.

This muscle twitches are also called as muscle fasciculation & appears when the muscle contracts on its own (without nerve stimulation).  Most of the times these symptoms occur without any underlying disorder & they are not harmful or may appear after viral illness/or long term illness. However, sometimes this muscle twitching appears as atrophy and weakness of muscle as well. Most likely cause of this twitching with weakness/atrophy of muscle can be when the nerve supplying to hand/eye muscles is not functioning properly due to any neurological disorder. If you suffer continuous weakness and notice reduced strength of muscle bulk in areas, please arrange an appointment with a neurologist right away who will evaluate the possibilities here by ordering EMG and clinically examine you. Hope this information proves helpful to you. Take Care & Regards!!!

An EMG can sometimes help find the cause of your symptoms since it is usually a nerve problem. You need a full work up to rule out many causes.
