whats the difference in inflammation or damage? how can the doctors know? what tests show this? what is the difference in symtoms or recovery? thanks going through this now.

thanks.. im improving legs feel better more banced after six months lots of symtoms have dropped off, but they neurolgists cant figuire out why im not cured by now. my neurolgists thinks it inflammation. that im making worst by anxiety.. im going to a phychitrist next week .. i dont think thats the problem but ill go talk to him. good luck with your husband .

Hi - just a thought - there is an MS associated rare condition affecting the myelin sheath - Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy.....try googling it for symptoms, treatment and prognosis. We are currently trying to get a definitive diagnosis for my husband's difficulty in walking, balance, numb feet and lower legs. Current Neurologist is hopeless so going to see a Professor of Neurology who is a world wide expert in MS and hope he knows something about CDIP as hubby's symptoms tick all the boxes. His name is Professor John Zajicek and works at the new Peninsular Medical School in Plymouth, Devon - google him!   He has had nerve conduction tests, which showed sensory/motor, predominantly sensory, axonel peripheral neuropathy, but not sure if an EMG was done at the same time. Got a call in to the current Neurologist before we see the Professor privately to see if EMG was done. Live in England and have socialised medicine, which *****.

Hi there.

Inflammation is a state of swelling or infiltration with cells such as neutrophils and lymphocytes.  Through an MRI, this can be seen as increased intensity in the white matter or along nerve tracks which should resolve if the underlying cause is corrected.  However, there are some myelin sheath inflammation that are indeed very hard to treat such as those caused by autoimmune diseases of demyelinating conditions such as MS.  Nerve damage is more serious, and this may be very hard to differentiate from inflammation with tests like NCV.  Rehabilitation may facilitate healing or recovery from both conditions, as well as adequate rest.
