possible brain impairment?

Hi,
11 days ago I took 100 mg of temazepan during the course of a day. I thought they were some kind of mild sedative and didn't realise how potent the are. I also had two beers that evening and 60mg of avanza. I had a terrible nights sleep with severe nightmares and a terrible headache in the morning. since then the headache presisited for about 9 days and is still like a mild throbing. I also feel a slower than usual and when I try to concentrate on work etc I feel a burning sensation in my head. Also I have trouble remembering some recent events in detail. My question is could I have caused permanent brain damage? Or is it something I will recover from? I went to bed and pretty sure I didn't drift into a coma or anything but I am so worried that the it is ireversible! I have never done anything lke this before or plan on doing again but could this one event have changed my life?

Kind regards

GP

Hi Dr

Thanks you for your reply, I am feeling better than when first typed the question. I did see a neurologist 2 days after and had a PET scan which was normal. What I am after is some reassurance that I will not have caused any permanent damage to my intelligence. I have been told that 100 mg is not considered a major overdose. In your expereince do you think this is something I will recover from completely?

Best regards

G

Hi,
How are you? Temazepam is a benzodiazepine sedative usually used for sedation to aid sleep. However, it can be used for anxiety or general sedation. Long term use will be addicting. Usual side effects are drowsiness, headache, fatigue, lethargy; and dizziness. It is a drug that is similar to valium, librium etc. The usual dosage is around 30 mg. Have you been prescribed by a doctor?

Manifestations of acute overdosage can be expected to reflect the CNS effects of the drug and include somnolence, confusion, and coma, with reduced or absent reflexes, respiratory depression, and hypotension. The half life of this drug is around 15 hours and so it’s effects can be evident till that time.

During that period if the patient develops respiratory distress, coma, hypotension etc treatment should be initiated.
Consult a neurophysician for further assistance.
Best.
