sudden blindness, artery pain
my wife gets pain in her neck and describes it as someone pushing a golf ball up her artery towards her brain. the pain is so intense it drops her to her knees. she then gets a sharp constant pain just below her ear and in her temporal lobe, with immediate loss of sight. her pupils dialate to light normally, and sometimes she has a bad headache with it. The loss of sight is suddent and complete and has lasted from 3 hours to 8 hrs currently, this has been progressing for the past 4 days, what is it, and what do I do for her.

There are various possibilities for the type of headache and vision loss you describe.
Your wide could be suffering from ‘benign intracranial hypertension’(BIH). This happens due to impaired CSF absorption. The headache is usually felt in morning and at night and is aggravated by straining, coughing or a change in position. This headache is accompanied by various neurological symptoms such as dizziness, numbness, loss of vision, loss of hearing etc, all of which are temporary.
The other possibility is retinal or atypical ocular migraines that produce headaches along with visual symptoms ranging from static vision to temporary loss of vision to geometric shapes in vision. Please discuss this possibility with your doctor. Take care!
