Making up for a substantial loss of blood

I was seriously sick a little over a year ago. I lost about 1 1/2 to 2 cups of blood a day for three months due to Ulcerative Colitis and, as a result, was severely anemic. I've been taking one iron pill each day for a year now, and I am only slightly anemic now. However, I still don't have nearly the amount of energy that I used to have. It's as though, I lost more than just iron when I had lost all that blood. Do you know what other nutrients/minerals/vitamins I could have lost?

Hi Steven,

Yah. I know. Prednisone can cause more problems than it solves. I was on it for three months. I have really strong bones though; so, hopefully, I'll be okay. I recently had a back x-ray done at a chiropractor's office. He said my bone structure is about 90% better than most people my age. I've been taking calcium and glucosamine supplements and a multivitamin that has about 200% of each of the B vitamins, in addition to other vitamins. And I do impact exercises, plus some weight lifting.

It's lousy being sick. I hope your condition improves.

Hi Renee,

My Colitis situation is a little different from most people. I only had one inflammation about 16 months ago. My colon was 98% back to normal one year ago and has been 100% back to normal for quite some time now. I'm not having any absorption issues. My doctor said my recovery was amazing. I don't even need maintenance medicine. I do take quite a few vitamins, mostly because I was worried about the harm the Prednisone could have done to my body. I'm also taking a multi-vitamin, and I'm eating healthy foods. Someone just suggested B12. I just read that it helps maintain healthy red blood cells and is important for the healthy formation of blood.

Must people with Colitis inflammation have absorption issues of nutrients and loss weight may occur too. It does take the body awhile to recover from anemia because the body has rebuild and that takes time. Suggest a daily multi-vitamin and to eat healthy foods you can tolerate with the Colitis.
