Thanks for your reply. You seem positive about the operation which is a nice change and has given me a better outlook on it. I know that surgeons have to give you both advantages and disadvantages but I felt put off by the attitude that I may go through it all for nothing in which case I felt better off leaving it.
I'd like to hear from patients who have had this done and their operation outcomes.
Hello.
The recovery is variable, anything between six weeks months. During recovery, you will not be allowed to do certain risky movements, but can do light work. Your good health will surely help.
Post operative complications include persistent pain for some time, infection (if not cared for) and a possible limitation of movements.
The benefits are more than the risks.

Thank you Abhijeet. That is helpful.
What are the post op side effects? Also how is the recovery? I have responsibilities and can't be out of action too long. I am 38, slim built and fairly fit, does this help recovery?
Thanks for your advice.
Hello.
The reason why the surgeon told you it may or may not work is that it is a surgery. All surgeries have their own advantages and disadvantages. And he has done his job by informing you about both sides of the surgery.
Since your symptoms are severe, you may go for the surgery. The recurrent disc problem will not be there. There can be some minor side effects after the surgery, but they are usually treatable.
Spinal surgery is not rare. It is, in fact, a commonly performed surgery.
