How successful is spinal and cervical fusion surgery?

I have had chronic neck and back pain for many years. I managed it with otc meds, chiropractic care and eventually epidurals. Nothing works anymore and fusions with cadaver bone have been recommended; first on my neck and then later on my back. I am concerned about the long term success, I keep reading about people having second ones five years later. The recovery sounds very difficult for a single person, neck brace for 12 weeks, no driving. Just trying to decide what to do and where to get info and stats.
