knee pian after partial hip replacement

I had the surgery in aug 2012 after a fracture of the femur neck.. Now, 6 months later, I continue to have severe knee pain.  I also still have some fluid retention.  The doctor said that it was due to atrophy of the thigh muscle but I have been doing leg lifts with 4.5kg on my ankle for 5 months, over 350/day.  If anything the pain is worse.  any recommedations?

I have consulted the doctor that did the surgery many times.  He keeps saying that it is atrophy in the thigh muscle, but I really think that is not so.  I fell at 0930 in the morning and the hip replacement was at around 1900 the same day.  I was walking with a walker 3 days later,  The pain is worse in the morning after getting up.  I have never had knee or fluid retention problems.  A second opinion is difficult as I live in a remote area of Thailand.  It sems that quite a few peolpe experience this problem after hip surgery with no definite explanation of the cause.

Hi there!

Well, without an evaluation it would be difficult to identify the cause of knee pain in your case. Possibilities that may need to be considered include chondromalacia, tendonitis, bursitis, fractures, patellar dislocation, injuries to the internal knee ligaments/ menisci, infections/ inflammations, arthritis, cyst formation, bone growths/ tumours, nerve injuries referred pain from the hip etc;. I would suggest consulting an orthopedician for an evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
