I was wondering if a total wrist fusion would give me a perm. disability and how much of one. It is my right wrist and thats my dominant hand, so looking to see if this is way to go.  I have a well respected ortho well three actually telling me yes this is way to go now, thanks for your help and God Bless.

Yes, the disability (immobility) due to joint fusion/ arthrodesis is permanent, while the other complications mentioned are fairly treatable.

ok I understand all that, but will it give me a perm disability yes or no, thats what I need to know, thanks

Hi there!

Well, wrist fusion or arthrodesis aims at limiting the movement at the diseased joint(s). One may not be able to move the wrist as freely as normal individuals, depending on the exact pathology and procedure, but this is the requirement for preventing further degeneration and pain in a majority of cases. Rarer complications include extensor tenosynovitis, intrinsic contracture, carpal tunnel syndrome, non-union, joint instability/ abutment etc. However if all three orthopedicians believe the procedure to be useful in your case, I would suggest to go ahead with it.
