Tenotomy for 1 month old child

Today after the fifth plaster casting Dr. suggested that next tenotomy has to be done in our 1 month old child suffering from bilateral CTEV. As per the ortho doctors suggestion we have consulted the anesthetist and he said that since it is a one month old child GA should be given, and we should  mentally prepare for it.we are very much tensed and we are not aware whether GA is required for tenotomy and what else will be the risks or can it be avoid and change to any other anesthetic form.please give us an advice.

Hi there!

After a few weeks of casting a tenotomy/ release surgery may be done for CTEV. Though technically it just requires local anaesthesia; a GA is often required for children especially babies, since you cannot tell them to lie still, not try to move and expect them to obey. Yes, there would be higher risks associated with the GA, but anesthesiologists have expertise in handling the situation and one should not over-worry about it. You may still like to discuss the situation with your anesthesiologist/ orthopedician and clear your doubts, if you have any.
Hope this was useful.

Take care!
