blood clotting during donation

Last week my husband donated blood to the Red Cross and at first puncture, the blood clotted.  The needle was reinserted deeper, but the technician was only able to draw a half pint.  What does this mean?  He takes daily aspirin and no blood thinners. He is 72 yrs old.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there!

Blood clotting in vitro is common and expected if flow is obstructed and should not be anything to worry about; though one may consider getting a bleeding/ clotting profile done at a primary care physician’s, to be on the safer side.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
