extreme pain that causes numbness

I have a pain that starts in my left buttocks and goes down to my knee and my foot making it numb for a certain time. This only happens when I am standing for a long time or when I perhaps walk for a while and it eases when I get back to sitting position.

Please advise what this is and what I need to do.

This pain syndrome is characteristic of compression of the sciatic nerve in the lumbar region L1-L5. Another possible etiology is strain of the piriformis muscle. Definitive diagnosis is by MRI. X-rays aren't too helpful. Generally there is referral to an exercise specialist who will demonstrate certain exercises. This money will be well-spent.
