severe ankle sprain

I sustained a severe ankle sprain on October 10, and after a trip to the ER on the 14th, and a trip to an ortho on the 16th, no MRI was ordered.  I am a bit confused by this.  There were xrays taken on the 10th, 14th, and on the16th, but no MRI.  The ortho stated that he did not believe the MRI would show anything additional above and beyond what the xrays and their examination had shown.  Can someone shed a bit more light on the decision not ro MRI?

Hi,
MRI is usually ordered when you want to see fine things that may not show up on a clinical examination or x-rays. Ankle sprain can be easily diagnosed on an examination and x-rays help rule out any bony injury. Hence MRI may not have been necessary.
Hope this helps.
