Marie,
Recovery time wise for the open surgery, did it take six weeks?
Thanks,
Kelly
My doctor has definitely indicated that he can not remove the fibroid laproscopically and that he would have to go in open surgery. He figured since he was in there, he could take out the uterus as well. He figured since the healing time was the same anyway.... He told me that a mynectomy would have to be open, something about where the fibroid is and that it's too close to the uterine arteries. i am going to see a Da Vinci specialist tomorrow. Hoping he has a different idea. I am 43 and i think I am peri-menopausal. My mom hit menopause at 48. I am not aware of any issues from the fibroids or cyst, but I am getting hot flashes, night sweats, depressed mood and lighter periods - they are down to 3 or 4 days, and I only use 7-10 pads per period - and most times it's just 7 pads. The last day is usually just spotting. The first day or two can be 2 to 3 pads and then the last days are one pad. I assume this means that things are starting to shut down, as this has been a pretty consistent pattern for two years now. My cycles are now anywhere from 25 to 31 days apart and I don't think the cyst is causing this. I would really like to be able to make it to menopause without issues!
It depends on whether the fibroid is serious enough to warrant removal of the uterus. Removing extra parts should not be done unless they also pose a health risk to you. My 10 cm cyst was behind my uterus and my surgeon was able to remove it without the need of a hysterectomy. I did not have a laparoscopy, though. I had open surgery. What your doctor may be saying is he is not capable of removing the cyst laparoscopically. I wonder how much surgery experience this person has. Are you able to get referred to a higher level specialist? A gynecologist/oncologist could remove that cyst for you. I would have been furious if I had surgery only to find out nothing was accomplished.
