7 cm complex cyst

I am worried sick.  I am having a hysterectomy next week for a 9 cm fibroid and a 7 cm complex ovarian cyst.  The doctor is more concerned about the cyst than the fibroid.  She said the complex cysts are more "worriesome" than the simple cysts.  She does not think it is cancer, but said she wouldn't know for sure until surgery.  I am thinking the worst and very upset.  Does the size of the cyst indicate cancer?  I don't know how long it's been there.  I had a US two years ago for my fibroid and it wasn't there then.  I also have an UID.  It seems like my fibroid started growing after the IUD.  Could an IUD cause the large complex cyst?  Any advise/reassurance is appreciated!

No... the statistics are the same.. 95 % are benign.. The reason I asked your age is that past menopause, cysts are more suspicious.. The Drs. are a little more concerned.

You're not a hypochondriac (sp too).. I know it's frightening. I'm a lot older than you are and really was concerned because of my age, but try not to worry.. Check out the Health Pages, and keep reading the posts on here. You may try to go to the "search this community" and put in "complex cysts".. I'm sure you'll find more information from the "archives" . Also, you will , I'm sure, hear from some of the other members regarding complex cysts.. I just wanted to sort of ease your mind.

SandyMac, Thanks for your response.  I take comfort in your wisdom.  I am 40 years old, and have the IUD to control heavy periods, which it does help with.  I tried to google the IUD and cyst and didn't come up with much.  Does my age change any of your responses as far as the cancer?  Sorry to be so hypochondriac (sp)!

First of all , you need to remember that ovarian cysts are common. Even the complex ones aren't "rare".. Take a look at the top right of this page" Health Pages" and it will explain a lot about all the different kinds of cysts .

Secondly, remember that 95 % of all cysts are benign. I don't know if there is a connection between the IUD and ovarian cysts.. did you try to google it?

And.. don't be concerned that the Dr. can't say for sure what the cyst may be.. They really can't tell until surgery and the path reports come back, but they usually have a pretty good idea.And.. no, the size of the cyst has no bearing on whether it is malignant or not.You didn't indicate how old you are, but if you have the IUD , I assume you're premenopausal.. Cysts in post menopausal gals are much more worrisome.

Most of all, try not to worry.. And take a look at the "Health Pages" .. you'll feel better I'm sure..
Keep us posted,
Sandy
