Dermoid cyst on right ovary

Hi, I am a very healthy 31 yr old with a 5 yr old son.  In fen of this year I doubled over in pain with vomitting at work out of the blue and ended up in the er that night.  After being sent home with no diagnosis I saw my gunk the next day, who told me my pain was not gynecological.  After a few more days of pain and no resolution I reigned to the er, only to be sent home with pain mess and an antibiotic for no reason.  Two more days later I decided to go to mass general hospital er, where after several hours and a ultrasound, la raw optic surgery was schedule to see what was going on.  Turned out I had a 3cm dermoid cyst that torsed and cause my ovary to twist, die and blow up to about 8 times it's normal size.  I was 100 percent within 2 weeks after the emergency surgery and now find myself with another 3.65 cm dermoid on right and only ovary.  It has been hurting during intercourse and usually during my menstrual cycle or ovulation or even for no reason.  After seeing two gynos, I have made the decision to operate,  complication here is that the cyst is in the center of the ovary with potential increased risk of damage to the ovary.  Has anyone out there been through this??  I am planning the surgery before the end of the year....am I making the right decision?  I've asked the new gyno to at least look at the cyst herself via laprascopy and make the determination on risk of removal once she's in there...is that smart? Am I pushing this too much?  I am so scarred from my first experience and need piece of mind.  I would also like another child if possible....I've been told that any decision here has risks, including doing nothing and just monitoring it....your thoughts and opinions are very welcome.  Thank you all so much!

Thank you both for the posts.  My anxiety to get this fixed is the fear of complications...I'm also worried that the damage to the ovary will be worse then living with the cyst due to the location.  Surgery is scheduled for December 6th and robotic laproscopy is an option I will be discussing at the pre op appointment. I feel liken matter what I do there is a price to pay.  What is the recovery for this laproscopic removal? What can I expect after surgery? Lastly, what if it is determined that the risk of damage to the ovary is too great and no removal is possible? What are my options?  Thank you again for your help and comfort.  This is a great site and helps tremendously.  Happy thanksgiving!

Hi have you tried speaking with a surgeon who does robotic laparoscopy? The robotic technique  makes it easier for them to save or preserve your ovary as compared to traditional lap. I just had an 8cm dermoid removed this way a month ago and my surgeon was able to leave my ovary 100 percent intact. Good luck deb

HI,
I can understand that you are anxious after your previous experience. The dermoid cyst in the right ovary is small at present, but if left unattended it has the risk of complications. Hence it is best to get it removed. This can be done via a laparoscope, without causing much damage to the normal ovarian tissue thereby preserving the ovarian function.
Take care and good luck.
