Dermoid cysts

I have just come out of hospital from having severe pelvic pain. The doctors have found that I have two dermiod cysts about 6cm in diameter one on each ovary. They say that I have to have them removed and I am waiting for surgery. They said that the pain was caused by my ovary twisting on my right side. At first they thought that it was my apendix.

I have a couple of questions: Would they cause me to feel tired all the time? and Will I still be able to have children?

I am only 27 years old.

I started having trouble with dermoid cysts at 17 and many of them were as large as yours.  I am 36 now with 3 children ages 14, 16 and 18 so I don't think that the cysts alone could keep you from having kids.  I will tell you that I did have 3 on the same ovary in the same site and about 10 years ago I decided to have that ovary removed.  I have had 8 surgeries over the years all of which were prior to the removal.  I think that I have only had one regular cyst on the other side.  I was always tired and I could usually get an idea that something was up because I hurt and was an emotional wreck too.  Now that they do so many of the procedures via laparoscopy there is very little discomfort.  I always came home the same day. Good luck with your surgery!

Of course this would make you feel tired.  The dermoid has caused your homones to go crazy.  As for having children, you are young and you only need a partial ovary!  I have  friend who had 4 children with only 1/4 ovary!  Once the dermoid is removed and you regain your regular cycle, you should be fine.  Don't fret when you don't get back to a regular schedule right away.  Sometimes it takes about 3 months for the ovary to recover.  They go to "sleep"  when there is surgery.  Take care and keep us posted.

You are on the correct forum for the answers you are seeking. I have a dermoid cyst, 2.6 cm. Unless the doctor has to remove your ovaries for some reason instead of just the cysts you should be able to have children. I don't know much about the twisting of the ovary. My cyst is alot smaller than yours and the doctor said nothing about it twisting my ovary except that it is a possibility. I didn't ask my doctor about feeling tired but I know I do. I feel run down, have absolutely no energy somedays. I wake up everyday not knowing how I am going to feel for the day. I am in pain alot but I cannot find a doctor to help me, I have no insurance! I hope your surgery goes well. Good Luck to you.
