Dermoid removal and weightloss

Has anyone seen, heard, noticed an increased ability to lose weight after having a dermoid cyst removed? I had a 12cm cyst removed from my right ovary back in march and my body seems to be doing 100x's better with keeping weight off. I don't know if its related because I don't really know how these cysts affect your body and hormones. I would think the cyst grabs nutrients and such from your body and therefore you eat more? I don't know, just looking for a bit of understanding, so any links to info on this or how these cysts function would be great!

I know this is an old post but I wanted to share my experience as well..
I had surgery exactly two weeks ago, I had an 8cm teratoma in my left ovary.
Two days ago my dad and one of my sisters kept saying that I look so different now, that my face looks different in a good way, thinner, healthier and that I don't look "angry" anymore haha so I decided to check my weight and I lost 5 pounds.. I know it's not a lot BUT for the past two years I was not able to lose a single pound.  I gained 30 pounds even with strict diets.
So, finally being able to lose five pounds means a lot to me.

As far as your statement "I am a little confused about the 7cm dermoid cyst cause it is on my left side which I have never had a ovary on my left side." Are you saying you were born without a left ovary or was it removed long ago? If it was removed, maybe some cells were left which can cause the ovary to regenerate. Also, sometimes ovaries cannot be seen on imaging even when they are there.

Hopefully, any ovarian cysts that need to be removed will not cause you to lose your ovary(ies) since the ovaries are essential our whole lives. Studies show that they produce hormones into a woman's 80's.

I had an unnecessary hysterectomy with ovary removal just shy of age 50 and it has caused a whole laundry list of problems including rapid aging.

I am getting 7.9cm dermoid cyst removed in 2 weeks , but I have 2 smaller cyst on right ovary , I am alittle confused about the 7cm dermoid cyst cause it is on my left side which I have never had a ovary on my left side. My bowel habits have changed so much , I will be so happy to get this thing out of me , I am 55 yrs old and have went up 2 sizes in last year . I feel bad all the time , no energy , hate to get dressed , hate to fix my hair , just so tired and in pain whenever on my feet for hours. But I still drag myself to work everyday. I just want to be back to myself again.

Since you have a hysterectomy scheduled, I assume you have a gynecologic problem unrelated to the ovarian cyst? As far as weight gain, many women complain of weight gain after hysterectomy. Even if you don't gain weight, your figure will change because of the loss of pelvic integrity from severing the four sets of uterine ligaments that are the pelvis' support structures which keep the spine, hips, and rib cage in their proper positions. The uterus and ligaments also keep the bladder, bowel, and vagina from descending / prolapsing. Loss of sexual libido and response are commonly reported too.

Even though you are keeping your ovaries, there is a 35-40% chance they will fail after the hysterectomy. Ovarian failure or removal of ovaries has been medically proven to increase risk for a number of health problems.

With the high rate of unwarranted hysterectomies (and oophorectomies) and the long-term harm caused by these surgeries, it is important that we do our own research.

I had a hysterectomy 8 years ago and not a moment goes by that I don't regret it. It has caused one problem after another and has impacted every aspect of my life.

I read your post. I have a "functional" cyst on my left side that was never there before.  I noticed that I was losing weight and then just stopped and started gaining.  I am scheduling a partial hysterectomy in January.  According to my doctor I get to keep my ovaries and cervix since I have not started menopause yet.  You mentioned that you lost about 20lbs since you had your surgery.  Did you do anything else to make this happen or was it all because of the cyst?

I'm 15 and I had a 20 cm cyst on one of my ovaries and I was really confused before my surgery as to what made me gain so much weight and not be able to lose it because I have a really good diet and am on the track team. This has really helped me have confidence that soon I can get to a normal weight for my age and be able to maintain it throughout my life..

I had a 3lbs. durmoid tumor removed on Oct. 9,2012 It was 11.25 cm and also ended up taking my left ovary. But since having it removed,  I don't know if it the tumor being removed or my pain medicine, but I can not stop moving, I almost feel like the energizer bunny compared to my old self. I will be excited if I start losing weight also, shedding some weight would not hurt me at all. But my wonder, is can a durmoid tumor really make you feel that bad and put on that much weight? I hope this feeling sticks around. It is just amazing to me that this is my 4th day after surgery and I almost feel unstoppable, even though i am limited to what i can lift or do but here's to hoping this energy and sense of feeling like my "old teenage" self sticks around! They thought mine was a cyst, and they did not find it until they went in and did a CT scan, thanks to having 4 kidney stones for 3 months that started moving!!

hey i just got my dermoid cyst removed from my left ovary 2 morning back!im so damn sore n bloated....im hoping to loose weight n get back to normal life soon!my doctor said il b fine in a week tym...n all my pms n other symptoms wud disappear...the incisions r painful...my basic concer in to b old me n get healthy...i hope i feel better in da days to come!currently got frozen shoulder n dizzines!am only 28 n desperate to have kids!my cysts gone for biopsy as it had been there for 4 years in my ovary!

Hi everyone I am new here.
On May the 15th 2011 I had a 18cm cyst removed from my right ovary as well as the ovary and tube. I wont know what kind of cyst it was untill next friday, but I have been losing weight ever since the surgery.For the past 6 years I have been gaining weight in my stomach area and have had a really hard time losing it and now its coming off a bit too fast I think. I have lost 20 pounds since May the 15th and I went from a size 22 to a size 18 in jeans.

I just had a 11cm simple cyst removed from my right ovary. I had pain in my right side right below my rib cage and in my pelvis for over two years. I went to my gyno at the time and she said that there wasn't anything there and she preceded to tell me simple cysts come and go and can be controlled with birth control. I believed her because (after all) she's the doctor. I followed up with my primary physician and he tested me for Gall Bladder problems and a few other tests before he concluded I must be suffering from a muscle that pulled away from my rib cage and nerve spasms.? Well, fast forward after lots of pain meds and trigger point shots...I was at work and feeling horrable which had been common when I stood up I almost passed out. I went to the emergency room and they gave me an ultrasound which showed a 6.7 centimeter cyst in my right ovary...I was so happy to finally have a answer. Unfortunetly, because it had been there so long it had caused numerous other ploblems. The reason I almost passed out was it was pushing on my blatter causing fluid to flow back into my kidneys...the emergancy room refered me to a gyno and I followed up with him Monday. He told me he was going to remove both my ovary's and my flopian tubes. I was devasted because I want to have a second child. I came home balling and explained everything to my husband and he said Hell No...These docs are idiots and couldn't even find anything for two years. He told me to get a second opinion so I did. I followed up the very next day with a female doc and she said she would do everything she could to save my left ovary at least because after all their was no indication of problems on that side according to all the tests. I went home so happy and my husband was happy too. Well, I had the surgery 2 days ago...earlier then expected but it grew to 11cm and twisted. I can tell you that I have never had pain like that in my life...not even child birth. I'm home now and in pain but on the road to recovery. My point to this long long story of my experience is if you know something isn't right don't be afraid to get a second, third opinion until you get some real answers. Don't be an idiot like me and believe that you pulled a muscle at your rib cage...I want all my co-pays back from that doc!

I too had a 10 cm dermoid on the left and a 10 cm fibroid as per the MRI!  They tried to remove laproscopically but found out through the scope that the fibroid was pedunculated (on a stalk).  They had to do a laparatomy.  I am getting on just fine now and more than relieved to be on the mend.  It is amazing how wonderful it feels to have your body and health back again!  Let me know how you are doing.

I too had a dermoid "twin" and huge fibroid removed 2 months ago.  I have to say I feel a lot better and lost weight.  I lost about 5 lbs and now I am trying to put back weight.  I am feeling so much more in balance.  Before surgery I was bloated and felt dizzy and just not well.  I guess I blocked all that out and attributed the stomach puffiness to perimenopause.  I do know however that dermoids are not effected by hormones and that you are born with them!  Glad that you are feeling better!

I had a 12 cm dermoid cyst removed last week. I also had my left ovary and tube removed. I was in pain for about 4 days. It has been 11 days since and I feel like myself again. I have lost about 5 pounds  and I can tell my body is getting back 2 normal.  I'm glad they found it. I had gained weight, headaches,dizziness, heavy cycles an all. I think I had every symptom. So glad the cyst is out..

hi! I'm scheduled for surgery next week, i have two cyst measuring 10 cm each located on the right ovary and 7 cm on the left and is considered as dermoid. my doctor said she will perform exploratory lap/open surgery. Is this necessary? Can this be done through laparoscopy..

I really need your advice guys.. please before my surgery...

Since I had a 14cm dermoid removed 2 years ago I had hoped that I would lose some weight but sadly it just continued to slowly climb. Three months ago I started really cutting back on food and upping my exercise regime (walking 3 km a day on average), and although I lost about 10lbs in the first 3 weeks since then my weight has plateaued and nothing I do will shift it lower. However it now appears that I may infact have another cyst so maybe it is causing me to still not lose the weight. Fingers crossed this time it will make a difference. None of the symptoms I thought had been caused by my original dermoid ever went away so I'm not hopeful. (symptoms were bladder/bowl issues and waking up in the middle of the night).

I had my dermoid removed on Monday. I don't have any children and i'm afraid it will affect my fertility. The doctor says i should be able to concieve still. I hope so...I'm still sore and it hurts to laugh and cough. I recommend getting a cane...to help you walki around...i used one of my boyfriends golf club since i didn't have a cane...it has been great to help me get around...

The incisions are very small...i got dermabound on them....I also had some blood during urination....but i was told it was normal...i will be back to work tomorrow....so two days off should be ok...if you have a desk job...but i 'm still sore and your not suppose to be going up to many steps....i also had part of my fallopian tube removed and none of my ovaries...i find that weird...but i was told it was because it was stuck to the tube and it was very hard to take off....

Well, I was just told today that they found a dermoid cyst when they were doing a whole-body bone density scan. And after reading y'all's posts, I am daring to hope I have found the answer to some of my problems! I'm 45, postmenopausal for 4 years (I know: early, right?) and over the last year or so I have put on weight unbelievably! I've asked doctors, regular people in case they have the answer, OBGYN, pretty much everyone! I cut back my calories and upped my exercise and still I put on weight! I kept insisting that this wasn't right and basically, drs have kind of mentally patted me on the head and smiled at me and nodded knowingly and told me to eat less and exercise more. It has been soooooo frustrating and depressing!

I've wondered about this myself. Except in the opposite! I had a 7 cm dermoid cyst removed almost 8 months ago, but have felt that I my swelling just hasn't decreased since. I gained about 15 lbs, just enough to not be able to fit into my clothes from last year at this time. Then again, maybe it's the thyroid issue - that seemed to pop up AFTER the surgery. All I know right now is that I would LOVE the side effect of weight loss without people telling me to be patient, wait to heal (it's been long enough!) or 'you eat too much sugar' (which I don't!). When you put on weight for no reason, it's a little concerning!

BUT with that rant out of the way, the good news is that I can agree with Gatsby in that I didn't know how bad i felt until after I had that dermoid removed. There are many things that have improved in my life since it's been gone! So look forward to that part & I hope that you are one of the many who are able to lose that weight. I'm having surgery Aug.18th for a cyst that was originally diagnosed as a uniloculare simple cyst, but since it has grown  since I went into menopause, my surgeon tells me there's a discrepancy on the tests I had and it could also be dermoid (as well as something else). I know that since this was first discovered, I have put a lot of weight on that is like pre-menstrual like bloating and even breast enlargement. I don't eat enough to have put on this kind of weight, and I always thought it could be due to some kind of hormonal imbalance caused by this thing. I'm not expecting to loss too much, but hope that I have the same results as you had, as I can't keep buying bigger jeans. I feel really full all the time and puffy, so it could be estrogen based.

I know that right after I had a miscarrige I started gaining weight and wouldn't stop! I didn't change anything about me or my habits..I just put on 25 pounds! *shudders* oh man...

I lost a bit of weight after my dermoid removal too.  I think because they cause such hormonal imbalance, you tend to gain weight.  Once they are removed and your body is in balance again, you can maintain your normal weight.  So glad that you are feeling so much better!  Sometimes you don't realize how bad you felt until you start feeling good again!  Enjoy!
