Honestly I would take her to another doctor for a second opinion. You have every right to request her records from the first doctor and also get a copy of the ultrasound both in a cd and the written report. Take all of this to the second doctor. Anytime surgery is recommended you have a right to get a second opinion.
I am sorry that your daughter is in pain. I am going through what she is again for the second time. The possibility of a cyst going away is possible but the only way to see if the cyst will go away is for a 1 1/2 - 2 month ultrasound after the first one. If the cyst gets smaller then surgery would not be needed and just monthly check ups will be needed to make sure that it does go away. If it does get bigger then that would most likely mean a need for surgery. This will help relieve the pain and remove the cyst preventing a possibility for rupture. Cysts do come back monthly with ovulating but can hopefully be prevented through use of oral contraceptives.
My first surgery was laparoscopic last October after I started having severe pain. I ended up being doubled over and severely nauseous. This happened due to the cyst twisting and cutting off blood supply. The surgery went well and I felt comfortable going into it due to my Mom being there with me and having a doctor that did surgeries on my Mom and Grandma. I am currently in the same situation again and have been having pain for the past 4 months. I go back again at the end of September after they found a 5 cm cyst again.
I'm 19 years old and I don't think that I could've done this with out my Mom and Dad by my side. I would suggest taking any questions that you have with you to the next ultrasound and getting them answered. I would ask about the possibility of surgery, what type of cyst this is. I am very familiar with dermoid cysts and regular cysts. My Mom is currently putting together her list of questions. If your daughter is in a lot of pain I would suggest a heating pad for about 10-15 minutes on the lower back at low to medium heat. It works well and lets me sleep through the night. I would just let your daughter know that she is not alone in this. I can understand that this is scary for you and your daughter but if you can get your questions answered you will feel so much better.
As for laparoscopic surgery, there are only 3-4 small incisions that are not visible so there should not be any body insecurity. Most are outpatient surgery that is done in one day with out complications. Recovery period can be 1-2 weeks depending on the person, average is about one. The day of surgery could be nerve wracking so I would suggest distraction or conversation that is not related to the surgery. My knee surgery went well with this because I was not in nursing school, my dermoid tumor/cyst surgery was more distracting since I had just started nursing school and was watching everything that my nurse did.
I hope that this helps and if your daughter has any questions I can try and help answer them or yours as well. You can just message me and I'll answer when I can. I'm usually on every other day. Let us know what you find out about your daughter and I hope all goes well with the appointment and that it's good news!
HI, I am sorry to hear your daughter is on so much pain, I know how painful ovarian cysts can be. Usually what happens is after intially discovering the cysts the gyne will give it about 6 weeks to see if the cyst is shrinking, however sometime this does not happen. Surgery will be done at this stage to drain the cyst, it is a simple procedure now, they can do it through laproscopy. This is just a small incison and she will recover after a week or 2. Also she may even go home the day of the surgery.
Good luck. Hope I helped.
