Just had laparoscopy and ovarian cysts removed

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to know the experience of others. I had a laparoscopy done yesterday where a large cyst was removed from inside each ovary. The surgeon also found multiple smaller cysts in right ovary. The surgeon informed me that he has sent the cysts for a biopsy and said ' lets hope it is not cancer'. My mother died of ovarian cancer at 42 so naturally they are more concerned. It is routine for cysts to be sent for biopsy or did you know what type of cyst before the laparascopy? I will see my gynae doctor in a couple of weeks for an answer but now feeling extremely anxious from what the surgeon has said. Your answers would be appreciated.

Hello,
Given your family history of ovarian cancer, it is important that the ovarian cyst has been sent for biopsy. Ovarian cysts are considered for removal if they cause pain or have tendency to become malignant or there is elevated CA125. Do not take undue stress as biopsy of the ovarian cyst is in your welfare only. It may be just a precautionary measure by the surgeon because your mother had history of ovarian cancer.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Hi Nikky83... I am a week into my recovery from a dermoid cyst removal and part removal of ovary. how you doing? Day 2-4 of recovery were the worst for me so I hope you are ok. If you are getting the gas pain try and walk around a bit but I found peppermint or ginger tea helped.. a bit!!
Before I went in for my op I was told the likelihood was that the cyst was either a functional'/simple' cyst or an endometrioma. They only discovered that it was actually a dermoid when they did the operation. Plus I am pretty sure it is standard procedure to send it off for a biopsy - that's what the surgeon and my mother-in-law said (she is a gynae nurse).
Don't know if this info helps but I hope it does. Take care and try to focus on recovering - not the easiest when you have other potential consequences on your mind! Wishing you the best of luck.. keep us updated. x
