Likelihood of cysts reoccurring

Hello everyone

In September 2013 I was having abdominal and pelvic pain and pressure so I decided to take a trip to the doctor. The doctor sent me for an ultrasound and bloodwork. The ultrasound showed that I have a 9cm ovarian cyst on my right ovary. At first I was freaking out. I am only 21 and had no idea why I would have this and what I could do to get rid of it.

My doctor then suggested I start birth control and begin a lactose, gluten, and sugar free diet. These were supposed to help reduce the chances of the cyst growing as well as more developing. Two months after beginning birth control I went to get another ultrasound to follow up on the cyst. Unfortunately it hadn't shrunk or disappeared (which I was hoping would happen)! Due to the size of the cyst, my doctor has reffered me to an OBGYN to discuss further treatment. I want the cyst gone because it is causing my discomfort and I am afraid that it will burst one day causing me lots of pain. At the same time, I have read several of your stories for your surgery and am totally freaking out. I never thought that laproscopically surgery would be so intense. I figured it would be fairly quick and painless but I guess not.

I was also reading that many of you have had more cysts develop after the removal of the first cyst. I'm wondering if it is common for cysts to redevelop after the removal? Or do you have any advice for me as I will soon be stuck with the decision to have surgery or live with the discomfort that the cyst causes.

Also, did anyone experience diarrhea with their ovarian cyst prior to removal? Thanks so much!

I've only ever had one cyst removed.  10x11cm dermoid cyst in my right ovary. Removed via emergency laproscopic surgery.  The surgery wasn't really that bad.  I was released the next morning (mere hours after the surgery) as soon as I went to the restroom.  It took a few weeks to want to go around and resume normal activity levels due to the pain, but so long as you take the pain pills and the stool softeners, you should be fine!

Hi! I have had it previous cyst removals, 1 on each side... With another one right now back on the right! You sound like me... They put me on BC hoping it would shrink and it didn't. They removed my first one laparoscopically and it was a easy recovery! Pain is tolerable with medication! However depending on your body (if your like me) chance on another one forming that doesn't go away is high! Due to me wanting to still have children I opted out of them doing a hysterectomy and they drained my 2nd complex cyst. It was painful but again tolerable with medication. I am now done having children and this time will be having a hysterectomy!! Good luck to you!
