Ovarian Cyst Advice

I am 25 and going in for a pre-assessment appointment next week about the removal of an ovarian cyst that I have on my left ovary. It is quite big at 14cm x 7cm x 12cm and have not been told too much on the type of cyst. I know that about 2 months ago when I had my ultrasound that it was at the size above and do not know whether It could have gotten larger in this time and was wondering if this was possible? At the time of the ultrsound the womb, ovaries etc could not be seen due to the size of the cyst and my kidneys were functioning normally at the time.
I am also curious as to what procedure I am likely to need as I am not sure at what point the size is to big to have the laproscopy done or if it makes no difference. I am also curious to know if the pre-assessment will include a CT scan as I have had no real detail as to what the appointment will entail or if I am likely to be told at the appointment he type of cyst removal I will need.
I apreciate any help you could give me, Thanks

Thanks again for the reply. It has been really helpfull to have advice from someone who knows what happens up to and after the operation, it been a long time coming really and im at the stage where I want the whole thing over with asap.

I feels its made harder by being left in the dark in many respects, it my first ever operation apart from the odd wisdome tooth removal so am quite aprehensive and scared about the whole thing. Its made a lot easier being able to clarify some things.

Thanks again x

Im not sure how long my pre assessment was, I was in a mild state of panic by the time I had it.. I dont think it was much more than 20 minutes. I had no previous surgery or other health problems, so I guess there wasnt much to chat about. Of course there was no chat about preparation either.

I had a constant mild back pain, very similar to period pain which usually affects my lower back. Other than that I didnt have much back pain or any pain at all really. You could mention it just to be on the safe side.

I had 2 abdominal ultra sound scans back in August, one by the gynae surgeons and one by radiology. They could see my womb but everything else was covered by the cyst. Maybe my cyst, then 21x17x10cm was just too large.
The CT scan I had didnt show the left ovary right (my cyst was on the left), and it turned out my surgeon couldnt find any healthy ovary either and had to remove it completely. As long as your other ovary is ok you arent too bad off.
They may not know every detail about the cyst and how it is located on the ovary until they open you up.
I asked my surgeon to save part of the ovary if she could and would reckomend that to anyone having benign cysts removed. It may not be possible, but make sure they try.

Thanks for you advice it has been really helpfull.

I had a feeling the pre assessment may be as you have described it, I have already filled in a pre-assessment questionnaire about my health including weight, height etc... The letter I  received said it would take 45 minutes for the assessment, does this sound about right to you?

It's hard to tell if the pain from the cyst is getting worse as I have pre-existing medical conditions that give me lower abdominal pain, I have IBS  that often causes stomach pain. I also have raynaud's that affects the circulation to my legs and hands, this can result in slight back pain.

Recently I have been experiencing quite bad back pain in my lower back and am slightly concerned about it. When I had my ultrasound 2 months ago they did check my kidneys to see if they were affected by the cyst but at the time they were draining fine, am wondering wether or not the baqck pain I am having is due to the cyst putting pressure on my back and kidneys or not.

In regards to your question about if i have had a CT scan to get the 3 dimensions of the cysts size, I have not had a CT scan  to get the measurements I had in my first question. When I went for my ultrasound the radiographer could not see my womb or either of my ovaries because the cyst was blocking the view of them. For this reason I was given an internal scan which then allowed them to see my right but not left ovary. I am not 100% sure if this was how they could get 3 dimensions of my cysts size or not.

Due to the radiologist not being able to see my left ovary on the internal scan it suggests the cysts on my left but am worried about the state of my ovary if this means that the cyst is growing in the cyst rather than on it. Am just hoping the assessments on friday allows me to get the answers to these questions.

Thanks for your advice and good luck

Your situation sounds a bit similar to what I had, my cyst was larger though.

The type of surgery depends on the type of cyst. Mine could not be drained (mucus) so I needed a quite large midline incsion.
Dermoid cysts can usually be drained and it should be possible to get it out of a smaller incision such as bikini line, maybe even laparoscopy with a small incision to get the cyst out of - although it is most likely wishful thinking with a cyst that size. Bikini line shouldnt be impossible judging by the measurements you have, even if it has to come out in one piece.
Chat your surgeon about it before your surgery.

Pre assessment is only to assess your general health for the general anesthetics. I had it done same day as my surgery, so Im not 100% sure what they would do for the pre assessment and what they do on the day of surgery. It will include questions about previous anesthetics (if any), allergies, possibly a blood test, possibly check your weight. I think they listened to my heart etc as well, just a general harmless examination. Make sure you find out what you need to do leading up to your surgery date, practical things such as fasting, when/if you need to stop taking any tablets you regularly take, if you need to call the ward to confirm you are coming in etc.
Whoever assesses you may have details about your case, so make sure you ask questions. If they cant answer them, they can at least point you in the right direction.

CT scans need to be sceduled at radiology, you may be able to request a scan but it will almost definately not be done the same day as the pre assessment.

Yes, your cyst could grow in 2 months, mine grew enough to complicate my surgery in just over two months. If your symptoms has changed or gotten worse in any way, it could be due to growth. Personal experience, it may not be like that for everyone.
Did you have a CT scan 2 months ago to determine the size? Ultra sound could only get two dimensions on mine.

Good luck on Friday.

Hi, thanks for the reply, let me know how you get on with your problem. Will let you know how I get on i can't wait til friday, just want to know what is going on asap. I went to doctors regarding my cyst as I hadn't had a period for 2 months and am now on my 6th month without and if i hadn't gone to the doctors about it it could be much worse so it is always a good idea to get it checked out and put your mind at rest.
