Ovarian Cysts (Complex)

My 58 year old wife was just diagnosed with a complex ovarian cyst about 15 cm.  She has been religious with her gyno visits for years.  Is there hope that this cyst might be benign since her health seems excellent?

Just as a note to others who may be reading this as well, my CA125 (blood test that checks for markers of ovarian cancer) was completely normal and my cyst did turn out to be borderline/low-grade malignant. The CA125 test is not a definitive diagnostic test, so even if this is normal, it does not mean you're in the clear. Please have anything suspicious checked out thoroughly.

Please do see that your wife is diligent about having this looked after and removed. Most ovarian cysts are benign, however, your wife is in the age range where they can become dangerous. Not to have you worry, but it is best to have it checked out.

I'm 29 and had a cyst of around the same size, my family doctor delayed for months about having it checked out and I had to pester him to see a gynecologist about it. The gynecologist wanted to take it out immediately because of the size and the possibility that it may rupture and cause further problems. The cyst ended up being borderline/low grade malignancy, so I was very lucky that the gynecologist was so persistent with his care. My cyst was first noticed during my pregnancy and wasn't removed until about 18 months later.

Best wishes to your wife.
