Dermoid Cyst

I went to the hospital last night, freaking out with some serious pain in my abdomin. It had happened before, but the doctor I have seen just told me that the pain was menstrual cramps... but this time the doctor rushed me into a CT scan, and blood work and all that, and told me I have a dermoid cyst.

I'm 20, and kind of freaking out.

He explained what it was, and told me that it's roughly the size of one and a half softballs. I've noticed a hard lump in my abdomin that I can push around and move, but I just figured it was my uterus or something. I have the CT scan pictures...and he said that I'll have to have it removed.

He said that it had probably been growing since before my son was born (March 2007) and it was small enough that they didn't notice it during my c-section.

I have no idea what the surgery is. I don't really understand what exactly it is... I know it's basically a cyst that can have hair and teeth and all that... but that's about it.

So I was hoping that someone on here could give me some insight from personal experience.

So, if anyone can give me some information that I can understand, it would be greatly appreciated.

If someone can send me a message on here, it would really help.

Nicole

Hi Nicole, my name is Shakeela and I'm 19 years old, in december of 07 I was also diagnosed with a dermoid teratoma ovarian cyst. My cysts was the size of a cantaloupe and it had to be surgically removed with laparoscopy surgey. Don't worry the surgery its not major, you can fully recover in a week and are virtually  left with no scars, so please don't stress over it. Its not as bad as it seems.

So you are going to have a laprascopy surgery? It's not too bad I had one done in August so they could "check" things out. They just open you through your belly button and cut you on your left side. Then they well my dr's glued it all back together.

The glue gets kind of irratating after a couple of days, and you don't want to be lifting anything heavy that's for sure. The day of you are totally groggy but mine since they didn't do much it wasn't that bad. It was sore for about a week but just the wound was sore, the belly button only felt weird for like a day or so.

I was very nervous it was my first surgery but all will go well and I'm sure you will feel so much better once it's out!

Good luck!

I had talked to my cousin about it, and she said that hers was removed through an incision beneath her bellybutton, and above her left hip.

I'm not really sure which side mine is on. On my CT scan print off, it looked like it was right in the middle.

But basically I hurt. I was prescribed Vicodin as well as Naprosyn.... so now I've just kind of got this irritating ache opposed to this stabbing pain.

I'm going to call my OBGYN probably tomorrow (his office is closed today) and get all of this sorted out and scheduled.

Thanks a ton.

Hey Nicole.  I think I had my dermoid and fibroid for long time because each was 10 cm close to one pound each.  I have to also say they are mostly benign but do need to be removed.  A dermoid is a complicated cyst and supposedly we are born with it.  Did you have your pre-op yet with the doctor and a date set?  They will probably remove it laproscopically if possible.  That is a tiny incision through your bellybutton and on both side of your ovaries.  If not it would be done with a laporatomy which is what I had because after trying laproscopically they found I had a pedunculated fibroid as well.  At either rate laproscopically you heal much faster.  From what I hear its about 2 weeks to heal laproscopically.  Keep us posted and you will definitely get support here it is a terrific group.
