Post laparatomy questions...recovery

Hello my name is Carrie and I am 30 years old. I recently had a laparotomy procedure done (3 weeks ago) to remove a large non-cancerous cyst, my left ovary and part of my left tube. I already had a  c-section scar from delivering my boys, one in 96 and the other in 2002. The doc said it would be easier for him  to just re-open the entire area, instead of just opening the left side. My question is....I am having a horrible pain under my incision on the left side. I can now move around freely and am completely off of my pain medication but the sharp pain on the left side of my pelvic bone, down through to my inner thigh is so bothersome. I can not sneeze, cough or laugh without being in unbearable pain. This has been going on since about a week after my surgery. I am going back to work in 5 days, and I do feel up to it, but is this pain normal? I have never felt anything like it in previous c-section recovery. If I were to sneeze, for example, this sharp pain would shoot through my pelvic bone and down through my inner thigh, burn like heck and cause the area to go numb for a couple of hours. I called the doctor a week ago to check it out and he told me it sounded like a nerve problem, increased my Ibuprophen dose and said it would go away after the swelling had gone down. Is this accurate and when will I be able to cough or sneeze again, how long should this last. I would appreciate any help you have to offer. THANKS!

Wow, I'm so sorry you're going through that! I agree that you should just make an appointment to see your doctor. It doesn't hurt to get checked. You'd rest easier and might find some answers. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon :)

Maybe you should make an appt to go into the office so your Dr can actually see you.  On the Hystersisters forum, I heard of ladies who had nerve damage to leg nerves from the retractors that are used during he operation.  They had numbness to the top of their thighs and their Dr's said it could take a yr to resolve.  Apparently the nerves run through the abdominal area.  Who knew?
