Remove ovaries, get rid of PCOS?

I have had PCOS for years.  I have 3 children and I'm 29, almost 30!, and I'm so tired of this.  I just had yet another MRI and CT of my ovaries and yes, they are still filled with cysts.  The nurse just asking me if I'm still having pain and the answer of course is yes.  I have one rupture about once a month.  I know this is not the doctor forum but we are women which means we are all very intelligent.  I want my ovaries removed.  I don't need them anymore and they cause nothing but trouble.  I don't have a whole lot of hair left and I'm tired of the pain, fatigue, acne and all the others joys of PCOS that leaving you feeling anything but like a woman.  My question is, can I walk into my doctor's office and demand they be removed?  I know demand is a strong word but I'm tired of my age being used against me to have them removed.  If an organ is diseased and it's not a life supporting organ, get rid of it!  Any input would be greatly appreciated!

HI,
You might also want to check the forums.. There is a forum especially for those with PCOS.. You may get some additional answers there.
As far as demands go, I think Cheryl may have a point and Laney also has given you some wise advice. The problem that the Drs have , as Cheryl said , are the Insurance Companies. In addition most Dr's will not surgically remove anything without a darn good reason that can be documented right and left..Otherwise they could face "Unnecessary Surgery" claims later down the road. Even though a patient may demand, and beg, for surgery.. that same patient later may say they never wanted it, they were sorry they had the surgery, etc.etc. This is still surgery and accompanied by a certain amount of risk. Most Dr's (and hospitals) will not agree to any surgery unless needed...
I'm much older than you and when they were going to remove an ovary, I requested that they do a complete hysterectomy.. No way, shape or form !!l  My Dr. explained that it was not warranted and as such ,could not be done.. Oh well.. But I agree with you .. for all it's worth !!
In any event, I'm sorry you're having to deal with all the pain. and hope you can get answers soon.

Take care and keep us posted,
Sandy

Hi There,
You certainly can demand your ovaries to be removed but let me give you a little insight into what that involves. I had it done Oct 15th for suspicious masses on both my ovaries. I am 45 and it certainly is no picnic. I have been thrown into surgical menopause. If I wasn't told, this is something I absolutley needed to have done, I would have sought other options. Have you tried birth control? Maybe Lupron which puts a woman into a drug induced menopause? Im not saying in any way that you don't have a right to have the ovaries removed, only you know how bad the pain is and I am a firm believer in quality of life. Just know that it is not an easy rode to follow. I am counting the days until I start hormone replacement and can feel normal again. It is a huge decison and I just don't want you to take it lightly. There are other options and if your doc isn't listening to you, change docs. I pray you get answers that help you make this decision. God Bless You

That is my one concern is the whole menopause thing but I've had so many people tell me they feel so much better after having their ovaries removed.  I guess the best thing to do would just go talk to my dr.  Thanks for the insight.

Hi,
I'm new here, but just wanted to send you a few (((hugs))). I am on the opposite side if the spectrum that you are, unfortunately. I am 48, past childbearing years and have been told I need a total hysterectomy (ovaries included) and I do not want it at all. My biggest fear is losing my ovaries, as I know how vital they are to hormone function and in turn, to our total well being. I have never had the severe problems you have suffered from though, so I'm sure that affects the way you feel.
In answer to your question, yes you can demand they be removed, but it doesn't mean they will remove them.  ;)  Seriously though, you have to take in to consideration insurance payment, and one thing I do know is that fa Dr. does not recommend a procedure, it will not be covered.
Have you looked in to any alternative treatments for PCOS? I know it sounds like you are going through alot, but I would try to exhaust all treatment measures before resorting to such a drastic measure.
God bless,
Cheryl
