It sounds like your cyst is fluid filled but you should get a copy of your scan to be sure you are dealing with a simple cyst. Ovarian cancer becomes worrisome if they cyst is complex (has solid parts) and is growing. Usually, ovarian malignancies present with a mass 5cm or larger that is complex. Recurrent, simple cysts are a common problem and can cause pain like you describe. It is common for these cysts to cause greater pain during ovulation and right before your period is due to start. In the absence of growing, complex mass, I would not be too worried about ovarian cancer. I hope you find something that helps!
Hi,
If a cyst is less than 5 cm, it is common for a doctor to wait two months and report an ultrasound. How do you know you've had a cyst for 6 months? Have you had multiple ultrasounds? With the amount of pain you are in, I would ask them to do a transvaginal ultrasound sooner rather than later (unless this has already been done).
Benign cysts can cause pain. Most cysts are benign. My standard advice is listen to your body. While the odds suggest you do not have cancer, pushing the doctor a little is worth the piece of mind. Ask the doctor if you cyst is complex and what size it is. If it is over 5 cm, complex, and causing pain, it is reasonable to request the ultrasound and make a course of action. If it is fluid-filled and small, waiting 2 months is pretty typical.
Hope this helps,
Chris
