What to do next

I am 30 years old.  I had two high risk preg within two years (my boys we delivered by C-section in Aug 06 and Aug 07).  I had a abdominal hysterectomy July 08 but was able to keep my ovaries.  I woke up last night in A LOT of pain.  I went to my family doctor today thinking it might be a kidney stone or kidney infection.  I did not have blood in my urine so he ordered a CT.  The CT showed a complex cyst in my left ovary.  I have an appointment with my GYN doctor tomorrow.  What is next?

As for what is next, expect your gyn to want two types of ultrasound, the external abdominal type and the TVUS type to get a better understanding of the nature and size of the cyst...that and a pelvic exam.  It's hard to say if the cyst is hurting because it is putting pressure on internal parts or if it is rupturing and possibly just going away on its own...if that is true, the treatment is for pain and for possible infection.  Or it may be something that needs to be removed, but no need to think of that until you know more information.

Hi, You could be writing about me in your post, I too had 2 high risk pregtnancies resulting in 2 premature births and 2 caesareans.  I then also had to have a hysterectomy but retained my ovaries.  last week I had my ovaries removed due to a complex cyst (2 and a half years after the hysterectomy).  I am 34.  For me, I jad a complex cyst which was haemorraghic, had solids bits and partitions,  It was not huge about 4cm but it was stuck to my bowel and caused me a great deal of pain.  The surgeon felt it had probably occurred as my ovary wasnt functioning correctly and had possibly been damaged due to the hysterectomy which was an emergency one so they didnt take care when doing it.  He said it had left alot of adhesions and scar tissue around both my ovaries and suspected in time, I would find the same problem occured on my right ovary.  I have been wondering for the past year if my ovaries were fuinctioning correctly as I have been waking up sweating, my sense of smell has gone through the roof, my skin is like a teenagers again etc, and as a result he gave me the option of having both ovaries out instead of just the one with the cyst on it.  I opted to have both out as I knew I couldnt go through the pain or the worry we;ve experienced again.

My operation was keyhole, I have 2 scars 1 about 1cm long on the left of my caesarean scar, and one right in the middle along my caesarian scar of about 1.5cm.  They then also went in right through my belly button (uggghhh!).  I was in hospital for 2 days, I found the gas they use to pump you stomach up during the operation left me with quite bad chest pains, I think you normally go home within 24 hours.  I am now 5 days down the line and feel almost OK, I still have bad tummyache but the wounds themselves are fine.  It does hurt a litle to pick my 2 year old up but nothing too bad.

The surgeon did tell me that in some cases they will put you on the pill and monitor the cyst to see if it shrinks but as I had already had my family and a hysterectomy he felt the best cause was to remove the cyst and ovary.

Hope your appointment goes well.

Vicki
