ovarian cyst with cystic mural nodule

Hi all,

I'm 46 and never had any PMS or problems with my period.  Went to a local ob/gyn with feeling of mass on left side.  After asking me the reason for my visit, and without examing me, she said I had fibroids and I would probably need a hysterectomy.

I went to a women's wellness center and they ordered the ultrasound, MRI, and CA 125.  The MRI showed a 10 cm ovarian cyst that looked like a hemorrhagic cyst with a 'cystic mural nodule'.  My CA 125 was 281.  The wellness center said this was more than they handle.

At another appt with an ob/gyn in Orange County Calif., she referred me to an onocology gyn. She said it was probably nothing but again mentioned hysterectomy.

The ono/gyn wanted to do a laparoscopy (spelling) and remove the ovary.  He said they will see if there is anything suspious in the pathology but they will do a hysterectomy right there if they find something.

I am totally ok with the ovary removal, and I don't want to be in denial, but I don't understand everyone pitching the h-word.  The gyn said I won't go into menopause and I don't buy that.

I am going for a 2nd opinion before my surgery.  Have any of you had a similar 'mural nodule' with your ovarian cyst.  Just trying to prepare myself for the worst.  Thank you for any input you can give me.

Thank you for your post :)  Best of luck to you CherBH.  I think you are wise to for a 2nd opinion too.  I have been a caregiver for my Mom and now my Dad and been through hospitals and numerous doctors with their medical probelms.  I put doctor's in the same category as a commodity and know they are in the business to make money and the care of the patient is sometimes secondary.  And the ultrasounds and MRIs are subject to the Dr dictating the reading..
God Bless you too!  This board has been a blessing to find.

Hi,
I haven't been diagnosed with the "mural nodule", mine are complex cysts with what appear to be "daughter cysts" within them. All these medical terms can be quite confusing!  ;) I do understand, however, your hesitance to have the hysterectomy. I sometimes wonder if these Dr.'s realize just what a scary word that is to some of us!  ;) It seems logical to me though that if they do find something out of the ordinary in the pathology findings, that they would do a hysterectomy.
I, also, am going for a 2nd.opinion. And I just wanted to wish you well. Do keep us updated.
God bless,
Cheryl
