procedure and recovery for ovarian cyst?

I had a recent ER visit for what I thought were sever menstrual cramps (i am prone to having terrible cramps when my menstrual cycle comes around) The pain i was feeling was different than any other cramps i had ever had. I went to the ER and was told that i had a ruptured ovarian cyst that was bleeding, and that i also had a large amount of fluid and blood in my ovary and that I have another cyst. I am supposed to be meting with my gynecologist here in a few days to figure out what needs to be done, but my mom thinks that they are going to want to do surgery on me. I was just wondering what type of surgery they will need to do, how long the recovery time and hospital stay would be because Im only a junior in high school and I want to know how long I would need to be out of school. Thank you :)

No problem!  Hopefully you won't even need surgery but I know it's always nice to know what to expect in case.  That's a pretty small cyst!  Let's hope the birth control option is there for that.

It will depend on the type of cyst.  Sometimes they can give you birth control to try to shrink a cyst.

It would likely be a laproscopic surgery, unless the cyst is large.  It took me about six weeks before I could even think about walking around a small college campus (we're talking 5 minutes across from anywhere).  Your hospital stay would just be about long enough to make sure you can use the bathroom.

I went into the ER with lower right abdominal pain.  I thought for sure appendicitis, but it ended up being a 10x11 dermoid cyst.  This was revealed by a CT scan since the doctor had said if it was early stage appendicitis an ultrasound wouldn't show anything.  They got me into surgery a few hours later, and I was out shortly after that.  I slept off the anesthesia then they made sure I could pass a bowel movement before they released me, which wasn't that long after.  It hurt like heck to walk the few feet to the bathroom they had in the hospital room, but I made it and was able to pass a bowel movement.

I have a scar maybe 5 inches long right above my pubic bone.  The most important thing is to take your pain medications but also take the stool softener to avoid constipation, which pain meds can cause.

Don't count on going back to school before four weeks, I'm thinking.  If you're concerned about missing too much school, they may be able to delay the surgery (if you need surgery), but it's going to depend on factors your gynecologist will know.
