Can I take this much hydrocodine?

I figure you guys know a lot about Opiates (maybe) and could help me.

I am not an addict nor have ever been, but on Monday I go in for surgury and right now I am in absolutly horrible pain.
My Doctor gave me Lortab 5/500 for the pain three days ago, but at that time the pain was not that bad.

Unfortunatly these 5/500 aren't even putting a dent in my pain now and I am going mad. Can I take 3 or 4 of them safely?
My fear isn't taking 20Mgs of the Opiate, but that I would also be taking 500x4 = 2000Mgs of the Acitominiphin in the pills. is that a dangerous amount. That's like 8 Tylonol. (That's a lot of Tylonol)

I also have a few of the peach tabs of Suboxone (maybe I should cut one in half instead of the Lortab for pain)
Will Suboxone be a better choice for severe pain. I know the Sub is VERY potent so I should just take a tiny sliver of it as I have no Opiate type resistance in my body.

(No I can't call my doctor because he is away for the weekend and the nurse that called me back didn't know ****)

Please help! It feels like a knife is being stuck in my groin area.

Have you already been on the sub in the past or more recently. If so it would cause your tolerance for opiods to be extremely high. Unfortunately the ceiling effect for tolerance on sub is a very low amount, about a sliver, because it comes in doses of Micrograms, just like fentanyl. Also, you can not take sub and hydrocodone together or even close together. The sub will make it impossible for the hydrocodone to work. It will block it's effect.
Just know that the recommended dose for acet. is 4000 mg. a day. That is 8 pills in a 24 hour period. It is not recommended to take more than 1000 mg. at a time because of the effect on the liver. Others have taken more than that and have been okay. But that does not mean that you will be. It really depends on your genes. Some people have the necessary mechanisms in their liver to break down the med and some do not, and it can cause liver failure in higher doses. You never know until you hit the amount that is too high for YOU. It's amazing to see when I hear of those who have abused the drug to such a high extent and lived. If you need a higher dose it is better to ask your doctor for a higher dose in hydrocodone like Norco that comes in 10/325. That way you can take more of the med with a lower concetration of acet. so it will not damage or ruin your liver.

I hate how they put Acetomenephin in Opiates. Why the hell don't they just make an Opiate only drug for pain and if someone wants to put Tylonol in it then they can do so.

It's the Opiate that helps the pain.

It's been 9 months since I tried the Suboxone. I never tried it again because I got so scary high on it that I had a seriously bad trip on it. I was so high I thought I was going to die and I only took a fraction of what a recovering Opiate addict would take.

That stuff is like dynamite in a tiny pill.

They do make Opiods without Acet. but they are the big guns. They are only prescribed once you are toleranct to the opiods. If they are taken and you are not tolerant you would easily overdose on them and that would be very dangerous. Drugs like Kadian, Avinza, MS-Contin, are all Extended Release Morphine. There are also those that are not extended release like Oxy-Ir, which is just oxycodone, and also the instant release of morphine, I forget the brand name. Those should not be taken unless you are used to taking narcotics.

In the meantime it would be better to ask for the higher strength of the hydrocodone, or you could go to something like Percocet or Percodan. It is oxycodone with acet. or aspirin. But again, you have to be careful of how many you take at a time, as it could damage your liver if taken too many at a time, or in a day.

Hope your surgery goes well and hope this helps.

Best wishes, Audrea

So are you saying it is SAFE for the 'short term' .....to take 3-4 of the Lortab he has been prescribed, over a 24 hr period.??
I know we aren't  doctors and its not good practice that we recommend anything to anyone...
but in this case he is no doubt abt to use something (when in severe pain) therefor  just needs a safety question answered...is that possible to do?
Hensley....If I were you I would phone a pharmacy if you can't reach a doctor, they could give you that information.

I agree with opus about calling a pharmacy for the questions. I wouldn't want to give dosing info as everyone's body is different. If the pain becomes too unbearable you could always go to the er. They may be able to give you a shot that will last longer than the lortabs you are currently taking. Then again, they may not give you anything as you already have a script. I would also say no to the sub and mainly because you are going in for surgery Monday. If you take it the pain meds they give you after surgery may not be as effective. Best of luck and I hope you can find some relief before Monday! Good luck with your surgery and let us know how it goes.

good idea. I can call my pharmacy.

I have a feeling I know what the answer is. I want to take 15Mgs of the Hydro but the damn Acetomenephen in three tablets would be 1500Mg equivilent of Tylonol.

1500Mgs of tylonol can't be a good thing. That's just way too much. I'm sure I would be ok, but I don't want to damage my Liver either.

Ugh god I am in so much pain! I have a swollen growth on my Perenium and it feels like someone is sticking a knife between my legs. I would rather suffer a root cannal with no novicaine.

Can't wait until monday when they remove this thing.

No it is NOT safe to take that much aspirin. Period. Aspirin overdoses are very dangerous. People do so, especially those with arthritis, but it is very hard on the liver. It is not a good idea to take any opiate before surgery because the relaxation of the muscles causes a degradion of surgical landmarks. Some surgeons are very good at working without these guides and others not-so-good. There is also a problem with anaesthesia.  With due respects, nurse Andrea is incorrect. The "recommended" dose of acetaminophyn is NOT 4000 mg a day.

You said Acetomenephine is Asperin, but not true. Asperine is Asperine and Acetominophin is the same active chemical in Tylonol.

Tylonlo and Aspirin are two completly different drugs. Lortab 5/500 has 500Mgs of Acetomenophin same chemical found in Tylonol not Asperine

Aspirine at 4000Mg would act as a major blood thiner and could be deadly at that dosage. Not true of Tylonol which does not thin the blood. Regardless 1000Mg is the max Tylonol that doctors "say is safe" to take at one time.

You are absolutely correct Hensley. Obviously, I must have indulged in too many seven-and-seven's last night. Or I have too many blonds on my mind. Tall blonds.  Maybe it's degenerative brain disease. Nevertheless, prior to surgery I would really ask the physician for an opinion. Post surgery is another situation.

If you look up the recommended dosage it will say not to take more than 4000mg in a 24 hour period. If you are elderly then the dosage would have to be lower due to the liver not functioning as well as you age. Also, if you have other health issues then the dose may also need to be lower. I cannot give advice on wether it would be safe to take more than 1000mg at a time. You would have to make that decision on your own. A pharmacist will tell you the same thing, not to take more than what your doctor has prescribed. Only you know what you can do, not anyone else, save for your doctor.

I understand you are in a lot of pain, and that is very unfortunate. You can always call your doctor if he/she has an answering service for emergencies, and they might could call something in stronger, like the Norco. Anything stronger than that could not be called in to a pharmacy. If it gets too bad, then the er would be the other way to go. The sub will interact with the hydrocodone and block the effects of any opiods, not a good idea at all in the now or the forseeable future.

I have heard others say they took more and were fine, but then again, you never know if you go over the recommend dose. I am only telling you what I know as a nurse, and not recommending anything. I can only advise you to do what the doctor recommends, and if that is not good enough, maybe the er is warranted.

Good luck, and prayers be with you.

Hi Hensley,

How are you doing? Is your pain better?

You have gotten some good information. Never take more medication than your physician has prescribed. And do not take the Suboxone.

Are there other things that you can do to help relieve the pain? Some of us find that our pain medications do not always work as well as we would like them to, than we must find alternative measures.

Have you tried warm baths or ice? Does your pain respond to positional changes? You can't add ibuprofen or aspirin as you are about to undergo a surgical procedure.

4,000 mg is the current 24 hour acetaminophen limit. This is being reconsider and there is a push to lower this limit to 2,500. So be cautious. As Audrea stated much depends on your genes, how your body metabolizes the drug. It's impossible to know how it effects each of us but age does figure it to it.

Take Care,
Tuck

I have fibro, and many other pain related disorders. I have been on Hydrocordone off and on since 1992. I am talking 10/500, have taken the 10/650 MGs but the amount of Tylonol is what damages your liver. I am up to 6 a day, there's days that i take 2 just so i can get out of bed. Somedays i take all 6, somedays i take less, and somedays i take more. Pain is a horrible thing to have to live with. Its not living.
I have done theraphy, and that made me worse. The best thing you can do it to watch your weight, any extra weight will also make you ache more.
Even when you are at your worse pain level physical activites will help. Even though it hurts horrifficly. It helps.
I have tried maybe 50 different pain meds for the last 10 years, hydrocodone is the only pain medicine that i can tolerate.
I feel for you, and i wish you well. Also pain causes depression, make sure you have at least one person who you can talk with and tell anything too. A support system helps.
