Keep a pain diary this month to document how much you need that third pill every day.
Although my situation is different I think we all need to support each other in the injustice to all of us who have chronic pain. I have an internal pain pump an are prescribed Norco 10 three times a day my pump places three milligrams of morphine directly in to my spine . I've had 5 back surgeries an also have rods an screws in my back. I recently had the flu an told a nurse that fills my pump that I was unable to take the Norco for a few days because I had trouble keeping anything down. This unsympathetic person decided that they should take a third of my medication away because I didn't need it. When I tried to explain the misunderstanding she hung up on me. I've been accused of failing my drug tests also so I really wish someone could tell us how we can deal with these people that treat us like criminals. I too take my medication as directed an cannot explain why my tests failed. I have a very slow metabolism an really dislikes being accused of everything under the sun! I know how you feel an you are not alone I would also like an answer on how to resolve this. Treated Badly in Kentucky!

I really appreciate your advise and input. I will certainly give it a try.
While there have been around 2000 physicians persecuted by the DEA in recent years, the problem is over-exaggerated.
A few Norco per day is a very conservative treatment regimen and I doubt very much your doctor is going to get in trouble over this incident unless he/she is mistreating other pain patients.
Many PCPs are simply uncomfortable using opioids -- their training is limited, and they have prejudices against possible "addiction" of their patients. I've always thought that these physicians need a good dose of chronic pain for a year or two develop a little human compassion for their patients. In their goal of "doing no harm" they are harming their people with chronic pain, and that should never be tolerated.
While you may have to find a better pain manager, try to work with your doctor by speaking of your pain, keeping a pain diary, providing information on false negatives and suggesting a factor outside of your control is causing this issue.
Remember, the more you know about your condition and its treatment options, the better you'll feel. I've had to educate my doctors to many factors of pain management. Frankly, it is just now becoming part of a medical school education -- many are just not equipped to deal with the illness called chronic pain.
Best wishes to you, from this grandpa.
Thanks for your input and the link to the resourced article, it is an abundance of information! Not too certain it will help with my doctor's stance, from what I understand the DEA has stricken the medical community with fear of retribution in the form of freezing bank accounts, assets and licensing mayhem. Probably would take a 'pain sufferers lives matter' type protest because we're all just silent sufferers
Phil, that is a brilliant, discerning, and perceptive comment -- that "detection values" may be set too high.
With *so many* people posting, here, with false negatives... I almost gotta say you are "onto something," here.
What's frightening is that in nearly each-and-every forum post regarding false-negatives, the doctors are so quick to give patients the 'boot' without any discussion (like me being banned by moderators LOL). Almost as if the docs are looking for an excuse / any excuse to boot the patient.
I'm so with you on this messed up system. The Federal Gvt reclassed Opiates. Now the Mds and pharmacies are acting weird.
I was told Aleve would help for a painful 1/2 done Root canal.
What a bunch of whooie. Pamela

Basically, a false negative may come from the lab setting their tolerance for detection too high. If you are a poor metabolizer of hydrocodone, you will have a low level of hydrocodone metabolites in your urine. When the detection value is set too high, the lab reports a negative.
Your doctor, instead of cutting you off, should be looking for reasons why your urine test was negative.
