Fentanyl and the Nicotine Patch

I have the 100mcg Fentanyl patch, moved up from th 25's a month ago, Percocet 10 for breakthru and Lyrica for my Fibro. I am trying to quit smoking and HATE that gum!  Was thinking about the patch but was wondering if it was safe to have both on?  Any suggestion?

Hi ellie,

First I want to welcome you to the Pain Management Forum and let you know that we are glad you found this Forum. I want to let you know that there are NO Doctors on this Forum only CP - Chronic Pain - Patients that help each other with our OWN expertise and experiences that we have developed through our OWN CP Issues.

The ONLY person you should ask this of is your Doctor.  I have NO idea if the Nicotine patch will interfere with your Fentanyl or not.  I'm on Fentanyl also BUT I don't smoke.  So PLEASE don't do anything, UNTIL you talk with your Doctor.

I hope that you will let us know the answer that he gives you.

Best of luck............Sherry

Thank you for answering so quickly, I will talk to my doc or the pharmacist.  I am so tired of all of my aches and pains and know that not smoking will improve my own health but am having a rough go of it.  As far as the Fentanyl Patch is concerned, that with the Lyrica is helping me more than any of the other "drugs" I have tried over the last mostly 10 years of serous issues. Just joined today and am finding answers already to some of my questions,

Hi Ellienc,

In reality one would think the Nicotine Patch would not have an adverse effect when combined with the Fentanyl Patch. After all the Nicotine Patch is just that, nicotine which I assume you inhale daily. However it is a concentrated form which raises questions about the interaction of the two.

As Namnam said, best to consult with your physician or YOUR pharmacist. It should be the pharmacist that is aware of all your medications.

I assume you are about to engage in smoking cessation. Good for you and I wish you the very best of luck.

Take Care,
~ Tuck

Hi ellie,

I was wondering what you found out about the nicotine patch?  I think there might be more people on here that might be facing that in the future.

Are you able to wear BOTH of the patches at the same time?

I wish you the BEST on quitting the cigarettes.  I KNOW how difficult it is as my Dad quit "cold turkey" after smoking between 2 to 3o packs a day for more than 40 years!!  He did it and I had SO much respect for him!!

I wish you the VERY best!!!..............Sherry :)
