Has anyone dealt with foot numbness and pain?

I developed pain, burning and numbness in both feet, but the right foot is far more severe.  My doctors are taking me off amitriptyline and Effexor to start Cymbalta.  The pain management specialist wants me to stop taking lorazepam, but is is the only thing that seems to help when the pain is unbearable.  I have several herniated lumbar discs but the pain doc thought it was CRPS, but has since decided that is not the cause of my pain.  Has anyone dealt with this type of pain?  If so, has it been successfully controlled?

Thank you for your comments.  I appreciate the prayers as well.  Right now I am going through horrific withdrawal from Effexor in order to try Cymbalta.  A SCS test is the next step at the pain clinic.

Hi, JimBob,

I also had several herniated discs in my lower back - the numbness and the burning pain became unbearable - I'm wondering if maybe the discs in your lower back are worse than what can be seen on the MRI?  Mine certainly was.  I nearly lost the use of my legs.  They finally fused my L-4 through my S-1 - and va-la. . numb burning pain is ohhh so gone.  Surgery showed my L-4/5 left nerve root shoved up into the spinal canal, L-5/S-1 left was as flat as a pancake, I did not have a connector joint on the L-5 vertebrae, and L-4-S1 right nerve roots were so flat the surgeon thought they were damaged beyond repair and healing.

The MRI showed bulging discs, and that's it.

I hope this helps.  I now have CRPS1 in my legs, unrelated to the spine problems and CRPS2 in my shoulders arms and hands related to c-spine issues.  I have burning, aching, shocking, freezing, 'nervous' types of pain. . .but never numbness.

I'm sorry to hear about this new development. Yes, I have this ALL THE TIME!  My pain management Dr. believes it's post-neuralgic pain, as I had chicken pox at 35 and then a wicked case of Shingles at 40. I'm 45 now and the pain and numbness began last year.
Doc wanted me to begin to take a new drug for neuralgic pain, for the life of me, I can't think of the damn name...the adverts show a man's feet standing atop a cactus. I opted to not take it, as, like you I'm on a benzo, Alprazolam, and that does help. Also, I'm on so many other meds, I'm afraid my liver will fall outta my butt one of these days! Very strange how the benzos help with the pain.
How long ago did this begin? Because what you are describing are also symptoms of Guillain- Barre Syndrome. If you feel the numbness moving up your legs and you become weak to the point of not being able to walk, go to the E.R. straightaway.

I will keep you in my prayers, JimBob
