I'm mobile!!

I just got done with the Scooter Store - they brought my chair, gave me all the instructions as to how to charge it, add the leg elevators (didn't know I was getting those, but a very nice surprise!), run it, etc.  He even gave me a "driving test" to make sure I was comfortable in it and could maneuver it around my apartment.  Took about an hour.

the chair is VERY comfortable - has a partially reclining back, adjustable head rest, the arm rests can be adjusted not only up and down, but also width wise.  What I didnt know was that the chair can actually go up to 6 mph!!!  I'll be a cruising right along!!!  They do have different speed limits that you can set it at, so you don't have to have it set at the highest speed - and even if you do, you control how fast you go simply by putting more or less pressure on the joystick.  The turning radius on the chair is superb - no backing up, turning a little, backing up more, turning more - simply push the joystick in the direction you want to go and turn away!!

I definitely highly recommend the Scooter Store to anyone who may need a power chair or scooter - I couldn't be happier with their service - or their product.

I also am going to be sending a great big thank you note to my doctor for helping me with this process - she was wonderful and even the scooter store employee said that one reason I was able to get my chair so quickly (less than a week from when I had the face to face exam with my doc) is that she filled out the paperwork and faxed it back to them so quickly.  He said they've had some customers/patients that have had to wait 4-6 weeks to get their chairs simply because the doctors don't act quickly on the paperwork.  So I most definitely give a great big kudos to my doc for her help!

Even though I'm having a really bad pain day today, I think I still will probably take my new chair out for a spin and see how it handles on the sidewalk.

Thanks Sherry - you made me laugh!!!

But no, I definitely won't be using warp speed inside - at least not yet - I'm still not steering the thing the greatest and don't think "tunneling" a hole in the wall between me and my neighbor would be hospitable of me!  So I think I'll keep it at "turtle speed" as the tech called it yesterday!

I also like your idea of the OOHGA horn!  That would definitely get my neighbor's attention!  The apartment complex I live in is all ADA compliant and geared/made for people with disabilities and the elderly, so maybe I can get a drag race going out in the parking lot with others who have power chairs/wheelchairs!!  LOLSomehow I dont think that would go over too well with the rental office!

I most definitely do feel VERY blessed and lucky to have been able to get this power chair.  I'm very, very thankful for everyone who helped me in this process -- and of course, for all of my friends here on MH who have been so encouraging and helpful.

Thank you all.

I KNEW IT - I KNEW IT  YOU ARE A WILD WOMAN!!!!

Honestly, talking about driving at the HIGHEST speed. YOU my dear ARE  going to get a TICKET!!!!! I can see it coming and I bet you won't have even had it for a week before you get your FIRST ticket !!!!    LOL

I'm so THRILLED that you have this WONDERFUL chair so you can get out and ENJOY yourself!!! You SOOOO deserve this!!!

TRY not to disturb the neighbors while you "PRACTICE" in your apartment. I suppose that you are going to go at "WARP SPEED" in you apartment?

YOU are definitely a "Wild Woman". Just be sure and make ALL of us CP Patients, that aren't as lucky as you to have one of these Great Scooters as of yet, VERY PROUD!!

Seriously, I think your correct to chek with the Scooter Store before you take those metal plates off. Like you I'm sure you will be able to but if you have MY luck and did it you'd find out that they WEREN'T  suppose to come off AFTER you did it. LOL

It sounds to me like YOU nedd one of those BEEP BEEP
BEEPERS for you to WARN you neighbors that YOU are "Out and About"! You NEED to get and UN-wimpy horn. You need a Horn with some sort of Cool Sound to it like an OOHGA  OOHGA sound.  :)

I can't express how it makes me GRIN for Ear to Ear to know that you have this and the GREAT JOY that it brings to you. I'd be willing to bet that when you woke up this morning the VERY first thing that you did was LOOK at and Touch you NEW Scooter. I know that I would have.

We all want to know all about your Experiences and ANTICS that you get to enjoy today!

Looking Forward to your NEXT update....Sherry

Well, my new chair and I took a nice "stroll" around the neighborhood yesterday - it was nice not having to stop every couple of steps to rest and get 'control" of the pain.  It handled quite well - no problems at all.  Since I'm still not 100% used to it, I kept it set at a lower speed setting just so I didn't make myself nervous.  But I think I mentioned before, even when it's set at the highest speed setting, you, as teh "driver" have full control over how fast you go simply by how far you push (or pull for reverse) the joystick - so I'm sure I would have been fine even at the highest speed.  I'll have to definitely test it out at that highest speed setting just so I can get a feel as to how fast it really does go and what that feels like - I've been moving slower than a turtle going backwards for so long, I can't imagine having the wind in my hair!!!  LOL

One thing I am going to call them about tomorrow is where the leg elevators attach to the chair.  They suggested I don't attach them while I'm "driving" until I'm fully comfortable with operating the chair because they do make it a little more awkward, so I don't have the elevators themselves hooked in, but where they attach on, of course, is metal, and it just happens to hit me on the side of my leg and after a while starts to be quite uncomfortable.  So I'm going to call them to see if I can remove those "adaptors" when I don't need them and then reattach them when I'm going to be using the leg elevators.  It definitely looks like they will come off - and the pictures on their website show the chair without them - but I just don't want to try it on my own without talking to them so that I make sure I'm doing it correctly.  I'm quite positive once I remove those, I'd be VERY comfortable sitting in my chair for long periods.

By the way Sara - it DOES have a horn on it!!  LOL  It's a relatively wimpy horn, but would let someone know I was coming up behind them!

One thing I do like about it also is - you know how those motorized chairs that places like Walmart have - well, when you put those into reverse, they emit this horribly annoying beep as you're backing up -- this chair does not do that.  I HATE THAT SOUND!!  So I'm quite glad it doesn't make it.

It's miserably hot and humid here today (VA), so I doubt I'll go outside in the chair today, but will "practice" more with it in the apartment and try not to knock anything off my coffee table or run into a doorjamb!!

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable weekend.

Absolutely, Sara's right on the money!! You NEVER sounded like a commercial. You even said that you checked out everyone on your other post. I really don't know why anyone would EVER have thought that.

You didn't do or say anything at all that wasn't right. We all want to know the best brands and the best meds that will help us and like Tuck said you are our "RESIDENT POWER CHAIR EXPERT" and I WANT to know how well it works and everything there is to know as I know that eventually I'm DEFINITELY going to need one also. An this also includes the service that you got with the company that YOU chose AFTER checking out ALL of the other ones.

After all WE'RE smart enough to know to check out everyone. I don't think that anyone here is so naive that we wouldn't check for ourselves about the company that WE would choose.

Don't worry and you don't have anything to apologize for. Thanks for all the info that you have given us AND for ALL of the info that you will be giving us IN THE FUTURE!!!.......Sherry

Just my opinion but I didn't think you sounded like a Scooter Store commercial.  You'd explained earlier about looking at all options.  This was just the best for you and stated that earlier.  So I wouldn't worry about it.  Besides, don't we talk about the different brands of medicines that are more effective?  Just as valid.

So glad your mobile!  That must feel great.

I totally agree about checking out all options before deciding on which, if any, powered mobility device is best for you (or a family member).  the same goes when you are checking out ANYTHING, from medical treatment to cars, to houses.

I honestly wasn't telling anybody that if they are looking for a motorized mobility device that they should only look into the scooter store - simply relaying my experience with them - same as we give our own experiences with doctors and medication.

I do hope that nobody felt that I was either being a walking (riding) advertisement for the scooter store or that I was advising anyone to use them without checking out all other options.

WooHoo!!  I hope you have a good horn on that thing.  Don't want you running people down in the aisles!  LOL!!  Congrats!  I really love to hear when other pain patients take a definite turn for the better.

I have been involved in obtaining motorized wheelchairs for several people and while I will not say anything bad about the Scooter store, it must be remembered they are salesman for a single product.

There are many other fine alternatives, that have varying features, outdoor riding qualities, range and battery life.

I would urge anyone to look around a bit before commitment.
