L4-L5

My daughter is 17 after giving birth she started having back and leg pain. We had an MRI done this is what is says.

L4-L5 there is a large 7mm central disk protrusion with 6mm caudal extension in the anterior epidural space and the protruding disk abuts the thecal sac at this level. No foraminal stenosis is noted.

At the  L5-S1 level there is mild degenerative disk disease, a 8mm central disk protrusion that abuts and deforms the thecal sac and the blateral S1 nerve roots in the lateral recesses bilaterally. There is mild bilateral foraminal stenosis with moderate spinal stenosis and an AP diameter of 9mm the spinal canal.

What does this mean she is in alot of pain.

It essentially means that her nerves are being pinched. The disc have bulged and it can cause permanent nerve damage. She needs to watch out for numbness or tingling (like her legs have fallen asleep). It is the first sign that it is becoming permanent. There is a nerve conduction chart on my profile you should both look at. It is very informative. Depending on how severe the nerve compression is will depend on what the dr will do.

She definitely needs to start researching for a reputable neurologist in your area that specializes in spinal problems. I personally think that surgery should be a last option. I had surgery and my back is in worse shape, you can't go back after surgery and seek other options. There are many therapies and treatments now that help.

In short her back is in really bad shape and it will take a while to get better.  She needs to be very careful with bending and lifting ( I know it will be very hard to do with a newborn). She should do light exercises though like short walks etc as long as it does not increase the pain. Best wishes to you both and Congratulations on the baby, Sissie
