Should I be feeling pain?

Hi, I wondered if I could get some advice! I have been in constant pain for ages. Not long ago I was diagnosed with two slipped discs! With a severe slippness!! LOL (can you tell I'm not a doctor!) I'm going to require surgery.at the moment I'm trying many different types of pain relief from paracetamol, cocodamol, tramadol and one I think it's called naproxi. My doctor said there are other options because to date I have not had any  relief. Am I being fussy or should I be able to get complete pain relief? Also my husband and I have been trying for a baby for about 3 years, if I was to get pregnant would I still be able to have spinal surgery or will I have to wait 40 weeks until the baby was born? I don't think I can cope with the pain for that long! Is that wrong for me to say that?

Please help. I would apriciate it
Thanks

Hi HarryQ,

I am sorry that you are in so much pain. And yes I think you summed it up correctly. Get some pain control and disc repair before you attempt to be a new mommy.

Mollyrae offered some great suggestions. There is no good reason for you to bear the pain. If your physician is willing to prescribe medications that will better address your pain than by all means take them. Pregnancy and narcotics do not mix.

Good luck to you. We will watch for your updates. I'm glad you love this site, we do too!! Peace, Tuck

Thank you for your reply. That has just confirmed what I had planed which is great. I'm going to go back on the pill just to be sure! I've already got a 4 year old so it's going to be tough and I developed ploysistic ovaries so that's why we've been having trouble. But I can wait! Knowing how much pain I'm in now any way!

So to sum things up I should get back on the pill and ask for stronger pain killers yep?

Once again thank you for your reply!

Man I love this website!!!

Hello harrieQ and welcome to the Pain Forum.

Slipped Discs can be very painful and most of the time require an opiate for adequate pain relief. In my opinion, Naproxen is one of the better NSAID's (anit-inflammatory).

Your Doctor would not even consider surgery if you were pregnant. Not only would the imaging (x-rays, MRI ect...) be harmful but the anesthesia as well.

If surgery is the only option for you then it is in your best interest to wait to have children. It will be almost impossible to care for an infant during your recovery period. Not only will you be in pain and having difficulty getting around,  you will also require narcotics and if you were to breast feed, the baby would also be getting the narcotic.

To sum this up, I feel that you should get your back in working order, ask for better pain relief and think about having children after this is all over.

Please take care and good luck with it all.

Mollyrae
