Therapy with a vengence

I had started physical therapy with a company I will not name. I have a couple bulging discs and one of them has a small piece of bone chipped off my spine and it is sitting on my S1 Nerve root. I also have degenerative disc disease and degenerative joint disease all in my L3-S1 Area. I recently went to a new PT rehab center and I told them my legs were both pinching and my but and hips had pinching and my back was having muscle spasms. They told me to work through the pain. I started crying and couldn't take it anymore. I thought the whole time that they were telling me what I was doing right but my back was getting worse! I just recently started this week with a new physical therapy place and all they have me doing is water stretches! I leave without more pain than I came in with! Some PT places are just not right! We know our limits and they should be better listeners when we are telling them it hurts!

There is my vent for the day!

Hi Kristine,

Welcome to the Pain Mangement Forum. I am sorry that you had such a horrid experience with PT.

Yes correct rehab and therapy will induce more pain but not to the point that you describe. Only we know how we feel and for others to assume is not only uncaring it is not professional conduct.

I understand your anger. I hope you will keep in touch and let us know how your new therapy progresses. Best of luck to you.

Peace,
Tuck

You should not be pushed to the point where you feel it is doing you more harm than good. talk to your doctor about this and makes sure you explain that the therapy is causing you much more pain than usual. You will experience some soreness and a small amount of pain while doing PT but from the sound of it they are pushing you too far too fast. Also talk to the therapist and tell them you want to slow down and cut back some. They should listen and understand.
Good luck and keep us posted:)
