Hi Lulu,
Thank you for taking the time to post in our PM Forum. Please forgive my tardy response. I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. It must be very painful for her. It sounds like she has been through a lot. My heart goes out to her.
There are other holistic type of approaches that seem to work for some ppl. As Shell said acupuncture and nerve blocks or RFA can be helpful.
Has she seen a DO? My PCP is a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy), without her bi-weekly manipulations I would not function. I still require opiates but not near as many or as high of a dosage as I would require without her treatments. DO's receive additional training to that of MD's. They perform OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment). This involves the use of their hands to diagnose injury and illness and to encourage your body's natural ability to heal. They "adjust" your spine and hips, etc, similar to chiropractors but with much more knowledge and more gently. Osteopathic medicine is a fast-growing segment of the health care field.
A DO has been the only answer to my chronic pain. I don't know if it would be beneficial to your daughter but it may be worth a try.
Has she tried a TENS Unit? Some ppl find that they reduce their pain also. It did not help in my situation but I personally know ppl that it did.
Biofeedback may also be worth a try, again if she hasn't already tried it. Does she see a PMP? If not they can often offer suggestions and treatments that other physicians cannot, or do not.
I wish her the very best and hope that she will find other solutions to her pain management. Sometimes we have no choice but to remain on opiates. I know the stigma attached to continued opiate use can be unpleasant but as I said sometimes there just aren't any better choices.
Your support of her is invaluable. She is fortunate to have someone that understands and expresses empathy. Please let us know how she is doing.
Take Care,
Tuck
Sorry to hear of your daughters probelms! Hopefully some others will check in here also that might be more familar with this particular probelm. All I can ask is has she tried some other things like accupunture, nerve block/burning or simular type things? Is she seeing a pain management doc?
When I first injured my back over 13 years ago I have to say accupunture did help me back then to manage the pain better. But I had a relaspe a few years ago and it didn't help me at all. But everyone is different.
