hyperventilation mystery

the nurse manager called and stated your bloodwork is all normal i stated well i am still having the hyperventilation with my pain. i stated could the hyperventilation be from my pain, she said well we will try you on meds meaning antidepressants if meds don't work then maybe you can talk to someone you may have a problem you don't know about. i was almost in tears. i still take the klonopin and vicodan500 plus now wellbutrin 300 and the new one i started two weeks ago serequel 50 antidepressant which i have to take at bedtime it makes me sleep. i have fibromyalgia costocondritis, sciatica scoliosis i feel so out of control. i have to see the dr on dec 1 to see what is next for me. i never experienced the hyperventilation at all before this is the first episode for close to a month now the pain has eased slightly, but when the pain was excruciating then the hyperventilation began. the klonopin keeps it in check. this isn't like me, i have no problems that i need counseling for i am aware of myself and what and whom i have this is so frustrating

Hi Helpme:

It sounds very much like your experiencing some real anxiety as Tuck suggested and she is right about your body experiencing wierd things caused by the fact that you have this pain and don't know how to deal with it. I have experienced something simlular to you and let me tell you, it feels like your going to die but that is not the case. I would suggest along with Tuck that you see a Pain Phsycologist for the anxiety that you experience. It's alright to feel some pain. I know it can be a scarry thing but you can work through it.

This story reminds me of my Nephew. One day his neck started hurting and was taken to the Doc. They diagnosed him with some type of disorder and for the like of me I can't remember what it was. After diagnosis and when he would have these flare ups, he would literally start to Hyperventalate. He did this because he was scarred of the disorder and didn't understand it. After much therapy, he calmed down when he would flare-up and now lives with it. He could not controll his body...his mind was more or less telling him to hyperventalate if you know what I mean.

My suggestion would be to make an appt. with a Pain Phsy. and see what the benefits might be. You might be suprised.  Take care and hang in there.

Hi Helpme,

I an glad you posted and are sharing your endeavor with us. I have been wondering how you are doing. Yes the hyperventilating could be from the pain but more apt than not it is a anxiety issue. Out bodies deceive us. They can control our functions when we are not even aware of it. You may not consciously feel stressed or anxious but I think your body may be saying otherwise. But I am not a physician or a therapist and I am simply guessing.

I think you are doing the right thing. You are following up with your physician and I think you should continue to do so. Sometimes a PM therapist can help us through these issues. I have heard very good things about their ability. I would not hesitate to make an appointment with one or if not available a very good therapist. If you enlist their help and/or opinion that will either rule out an anxiety related condition therefore allowing the PCP to concentrate on what is causing the hyperventilation or rule it in and assist you will controlling and treating the condition.

Pain can be stress causing and I have hyperventalated when in severe pain. It is important to remember that the pain will not cause death, it is merely a symptom that something is wrong or that you are a CP sufferer. Actually pain is our friend. It lets us know when something is not right. Ppl with chronic pain, like me must remember that it is a disease in itself. I often say that the pain will not kill me, it only makes me wish I were dead. When I feel that way I try to put it in perspective. Any CP sufferer that claims anxiety is not a component of their pain is not being honest with themselves. But again that is just my opinion, from my experience.

Best of luck to you. Please continue to update us and let us know how you are doing. You have a lot of courage and we will are here to support you when you need us. And as always, Take Care, Tuck
