Hello Judon,
Your brother is blessed to have such a concerned and caring sibling such as yourself. Roxicodone is a trade name for Oxycodone the generic name. Methadone is the longer lasting pain medication and the oxycodone is being prescribed for what is know as break through pain. This is a very common practice. The Methadone will not cancel out the Roxicodone.
In my opinion in addition to the pain from the damage of his injuries your brother is probably experiencing what is called phantom pain. Phantom pain can be very difficult to treat. It occurs when a limb is lost. Your brain does not know the know the limb is no longer there and many ppl still "feel" that limb. The nerves in the brain that used to serve that limb apparently "rewire" themselves, which remaps the brain's circuitry. Our brains are so very complex and not completely understood.
A TENS Unit can sometimes be effecting in reducing the pain but finding a treatment or medication to successfully treat phantom pain again can be very difficult. If your brothers pain is poorly controlled he may need an increase or change in medications but in my opinion he does need the Roxicodone in addition to the Methadone.
I am so glad that your brother has you. If he will allow it you may want to go on a physician's visit with him and express your concern regarding his pain. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.
Good luck to you both, Tuck
i'm sorry that your brother is still in pain.
he really does need to discuss this with his dr.
it is perfectly ok for him to do so.
is his pain bad all the time? if this is the case then his dr might consider increasing his dose of methadone.
if his pain is only bad at certain times, then the dr may increase his oxycodone(roxi) to a stronger dose. or he may try a different breakthrough med.
i don't at all mind your questions. I'm glad your brother has you looking out for him.
don't hesitate to ask more if need be.
your brother should indicate how bad his pain is, and how often his pain is bothering him.
it will then be up to the dr to decide the best course of action.
if your bother is unhappy with the results, he should find another dr to help him, possibly a proper pain management dr.

Yes i did mean roxicodone ,and thank you for the response .He has been on these for two years now and like i said it just made no sense to me ...In your opinion ,and i know it is a opinion ,,since he is not getting out of severe pain would it make sense to eliminate one of these like the roxi and go on strictly methadone ,,which is cleaner and i beleive is more effective ..the reason i ask here is because he is kind of afraid to ask his Doctor the old do not question me type Doc. It is a darn shame that he is feeling this ,but i think if i can show him the this he might get a new doctor or at least tell him it is not working..sorry for the windy response ..i just want folks to know i am not playing doctor ,i just want some help for my brother ,,thanks again..
hi,
when you say roxycontin, do you mean oxycontin? or roxicodone? they are different and i've never heard of roxycontin.
oxycontin is a longer acting form of oxycodone(roxi). either are used as breakthrough pain meds.
maybe you mean roxicodone. that is a short acting oxycodone drug, and is entirely normal to be prescribed with methadone.
to an extent you are right though. a powerful med like methadone can block a weaker one, but usually only partially.
i'm sure it's nothing to worry about.
