This is something you need to talk to your Dr about. If your back pain is getting worse you may need tests to see if things are getting worse with your back.
If you and your Dr decide you need more pain medication you may want to consider a med that doesn't contain acetaminophen.

Sure wish my pain management Doc had mentioned the constipation element of the oxycodone. Now I'm blown out with hemorrhoids and can barely walk.

I forgot to mention that it is wise to request a liver panel test from your doctor at least once per year while on opioid therapy and especially while be treated with an opioid/acetaminophen combo med like Percocet or Vicodin.

Hi Linda and welcome to the pain management community.

Oxycodone is safe to take everyday as long as you don't have liver disease as it is primarily metabolized by the liver.  I am on the same medication and I have been taking it everyday for almost 2 years.  I have been on some form of opioid medication for the past 6 years on a daily basis.

It is the acetaminophen (aka tylenol) component that you should be most concerned about.  Too much tylenol can cause liver damage and even liver failure.  Initially, the maximum safe dose put out by the pharmaceutical company was 4,000 mg per day; however, there is a new lower maximum recently released that states 2,600 mg per day is the maximum.  The maximum single dose of tylenol that can be taken safely is 1,000 mg.

The oxycodone-acetaminophen that you are taking contains in each pill 5 mg of oxycodone and 325 mg of acetaminophen (aka tylenol).  Make sure that you tally up the acetaminophen in each pill you take over the day and make sure that you don't exceed 1,000 mg in a single dose and 2,600 mg per day.  If you start to get to the 2,600 mg limit, you can ask your doctor about oxycodone IR or roxicodone that just contains oxycodone without the tylenol.  I don't think that taking a tylenol amount near the limit deemed safe is a good practice as obviously the pharmaceutical company doesn't know what is truly a safe dose of tylenol as the 4,000 mg limit is now 2,600 mg.  My doctor wants my dose of tylenol to stay below 2,000 mg while taking this medication.

The opioid component (oxycodone) does not damage internal organs and the most common complaint is constipation which can be effectively managed with an over the counter laxative/stool softener.  In men, low testosterone levels have been observed but can be handled with hormone replacement therapy.

I hope your medication gives you pain relief and allows you to join in on more of life.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.

Im sure it's better for your body not to take them but if you need them you need them. I think that pretty much goes for any medication. There are blood test to monitor the effects on your organs your doctor can order. If your concerned you could ask about having the labs every few months. Good luck to you
