I have also had been having pain in the right side of my head. I t starts on the upper right side above my my right eye and feels like a sharp ice pick being shoved down to right above my ear. It is not an ache but a severe sharp pain. It is very debilitating and lasts for a few seconds to a few minutes, leaving me very drained and very scared.. the pain is so sever sometimes that it closes my right eye. I have had my eyes checked by an opthalmolgist and my MD did seem to worried. called it scalp pain, but this pain started after I came from Gall bladder surgery in 2005 and it was the first thing that came from mouth when I returned to room after recovery..I have a head pain, not a head ache.. I was given a IV pain med during my 24 hr stay in hospiyal, but this pain has never resolved and lately it has bee getting alot more freq. and intense. Again I went to MD, with blood test and ct of head done with no clear answer given. Just given anti inflamatory med given..
So what do next? I do worry and get scared because when I bend over sometimes I get this pain or when I cough or when I do nothing!

Wow! Five years and someone else is actually experiencing "my" pain. I thought I was the only one. They finally figured out I had a nerve problem with my shoulder. When you have this pain, try rubbing the around the shoulder blade on your back. Mine is almost at the top of my right shoulder blade. If it relieves it, or makes it a lot worse, it may be the same thing I have. I have learned to deal with. The first few times I had it were in the middle of the night after sleeping on my right side. I literally thought I had an aneurysm (sp). No one could figure it out. Five years later they finally did. The pain scared me. I have major back problems and a very high pain tolerance, but not with that pain. Sometimes it would last almost an hour. By that time, I wanted to beat my head against a wall!! and yes, extremely drained afterwards because it was so bad.
I believe it is one of the occipital nerves. When it is really bad, it goes from the base of my neck, up over my head, down the side of my face and down my neck. That is on extremely bad days. It is the worst pain imaginable!
Good luck.
