8 year old student tells me he wants to kill himself.

I am watching a class of 8 year old's.
There is this little boy who often talks down on himself. But nothing disturbing.
The other day i found him in a corner after the bell crying. He would not tell me why. The conversation went on and he told me he wants to kill himself and he has for a while.
I was completely shocked and did not know how to reply. At this point he would not move or talk to anyone else. I told the school and they just said thanks for letting us know. As if brushing it off.
I guess my question is is this normal and should i be as concerned as i am. And what i can do with my time with him to help him

Not normal.  You should be concerned.  Will he tell you what is happening in his life, such that he feels like killing himself?  If it is abuse when he is home, I would think you should make a report to Children's Protective Services if the school is not willing to do anything.

One thought is that he might be bullied at school.  Has anyone noticed any unusual behaviour in the school yard before or after school or during recess?  He sounds totally scared and frightened.  Just wondering ...

From your description he does sound afraid , I think that the school should be finding out some answers as to why he is like this , it could indeed be bullying but also could be home problems .Have you any way to see or find out who picks him up from school , who brings him and where he lives , if the school wont help and you could ask them again ,tell them you are concerned for him .This was me I wouldn't let go, find out more about him ..Good luck  .

My seven year old son was having a difficult time with his emotions. He was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was two. We had a behavioral management therapist come to our home for intense therapy sessions. I took my son to the E.R. because he started saying that he wanted to kill himself and he became combative towards the therapist. He was diagnosed with a mood disorder (chemical imbalance). We have good days and bad days; just trying to keep him happy and safe. I homeschool my son because he has a deadly peanut allergy. Please let the parents know that he should be evaluated immediately so that he can get the proper help that he deserves.
