Just found our 11 yr DD was prediabetic

I am new to this board.  I found it looking for answers. I am very concerned.  I just found out today that my 11 yr old daughter is pre-diabetic.  She is about 5'5" and weighs 160lbs.  The Doc said she has to loose weight.  She said she needed to exercise daily.  She also has activity induced asthma, so we are limited on exercise.  I have no idea where to even start to help her.  If anyone can give me any advice, or web sites with answers or good healthy diets, it would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!!

As an asthmatic I totally understand about the activity induced asthma.  You might look into a girls softball team.  Softball worked for me because there are brief periods of activity followed by normal levels of activity (ie. running bases, waiting in the field for the other team to hit the ball).  If thats too much for her, you might look into yoga or pilates, which is done indoors and is very relaxing but also great excercise.
Hope this helps

I am a personal Trainer in the Atlanta area. Your Doctor should send her to a diabetic nutritionist. If not you need to find one.  At the age on 11 and with our society being so judgemental I think it is important to make sure she understands her illness and how serious it can be.  Get her doing exercise and activites she likes to do as a kid.  Don't make her hit the gym like an adult if she would feel embarrased.  If she wants to go to the gym and finds it fun sure.  Otherwise play at the park, bike, play tag, etc.....Make sure the family makes the lifestyle changes with her.  Letting her know you are all there to make sure you all stay healthy.  I would NOT recommend hiring a trainer or making her be the only one eating healthy at your home.  You can reuin her self-esteem. She is going to be going through enough changes as a young woman.  Gook Luck and let me know if you have any other questions.
