My daughter was hospitalized at 4yrs old for a breathing attack, possibly allergy induced athsma. She was given an injection of prednisone at hospital one. Because this hospital did not care for children over night, she was transfered to hospital two, where she was given yet another injection of steroids and some oral estrogen medicine. A few days later, she was discharged and I was instructed to give her a steroids tablet, crushed in orange juice 3 times a day for a week. My daughter began swelling up the first week and by 6months was obese. She has never had another steroid since, but she can not loose the weight and keeps gaining. She is now 12yrs and 40lbs overweight. We are healthy eaters! We drink water 90% of the time, maybe two pops a month if that. We eat fast food less than 1 time every other month.
I am 5'8 and 140lbs at 32yrs. We are active. My daughter plays several sports, including volleyball and basketball. We even lived on an island that did not allow cars, only bikes and she would bike 1.5miles to school everyday and 3miles to the horse barn to help out with 4h horses... She still did not loose weight. We would run together, 1-2 miles 3times a week and she would not loose weight. I have noticed that she looks lik e she had some knee knock as her legs go in at knees, I am guessimg because all the extra weight she is carrying. She also has a buffalo hump of fatty tissue at the base of her neck, between shoulder blades. Her weight is mostly around her middle... She looks swollen. She does not have cushings disease as I have had her tested, after fighting with doctors for nearly two years to get the test. Doctors insist she has a bad American kid diet with no excercise and deny that short term steroid use could cause her weight problem. But I know there is something wrong! She can not eat like a normal child because she will gain weight so easily.
My daughter was breastfed for two years as a baby. I have always fed her lots of fruit and veggies, limited carbs and even cut out all white flour and potato products... Also all processed foods from her diet. Very little change. I lost 10lbs... Down to 130lbs while she lost 2lbs.
I really believe her little body was overdosed on steroids, estrogen medicine and steroids have a serious drug interaction in that estrogen nearly triples the effect of steroids. Also, I do not believe hospital two realized hospital one had already injected her with steroids when they did.
I think something was damaged in my daughter's body as a result.Maybe a system that deals with the breaking down and storage of fat? I have had her petuitary glad looked at, her blood sugar is normal, her cholestrol is high and I worry about long term heart damage while her organs ate still forming. She did have two kidney infections, which I read can be a side effect of steroids. She also experienced chronic stomach aches for about 6months after taking her 1week oral steroids. She is sensitive and her vaccines were giving her seizures, so I do not vaccinate her anymore. I do not think her body handles foreign drugs/chemicals well so the steroids may have done something horrible to her.
I have spent countless nights trying to find answers and sleepless with worry, I have called the drug manufactures, I have talked with the FDA and I have taken her to several doctors. They all say the same thing... She was only one steroids for 11 days which wasnt long enough for any long term problems. My arguement had been that a 4yr old was given HUGE doses in a short period of time... I think something got fried! I have lost all faith in the medical field of medicine and feel doctors are actually ignorant to what drugs are capable of doing... Not everyone is the same. Different bodies react differently to the same drug... After all, some people have allergies and can die from drugs that help others get well. Does anyone know a good doctor in Michigan, near Detroit who knows what is going on and can help me fix my daughter before she has life long problems?
