12 year old daughter

My healthy 12 year old daughter has her period every 11 days with excessive bleeding which has been the norm since she started a year ago.  Any idea what the cause could be?  Is there any treatment aside from birth control or hormones?
Thanks,
Melanie

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your daughter. I started when I was 9, and I also had a period every two weeks. Then it started to space its self out, so it may just be until her body adjusts to having periods, at a young age.
You should take her to the doctors, they can do blood tests to check her hormones, and then a scan to see if there are any cysts.
If you do not want her on any hormones or birth control pills, there are also tablets that are given to diabetics which lower the insulin level which produces extra testosterone which can cause PCOS. In a few years if she cannot bear it any longer there is also ovarian drilling which sounds horrible but they just put a few tiny holes in the ovaries which is supposed to be very effective. it is done through a laparoscopy which is a keyhole surgery tiny cut through the belly button. I had a laparoscopy and was walking out the ward with in the day. Its two weeks on now and I am attending dance classes!! So it is really not as bad as it sounds.
Hope this helps

take her the doctor and he will run some blood work to see what the problem is. i know u may not want to put her on the pill, but it may be the only option you have so she will have a normal 28 day cycle. a pill like Yasmin which I take, is a low dose pill. If she has acne then Yasmin will also clear that up too. Good luck

Oh, I'm so sorry your daughter is going through this at such a young age. I really don't know what may cause her to bleed so much so often. What other symptoms does she have? Does she have excessive hair growth? Weight gain? Anything else that might indicate PCOS? Have the doctor see her so that they can run some tests, maybe an ultrasound or something.  Good luck, honey.
