Help Severe Pain

Hi Everyone,

All summer long, I have been experiencing bouts of hypoglycemia.  I went to an endocrinologist and test results indicate that I have PCOS.  I am now taking 500mg Metformin 1x day.  I also suffer from pseudo tumor cerebri, a condition that causes intercrainial pressure on the brain.  I get severe headaches and my pituitary glands position has been altered by the increased levels of fluid.  I was taking acetazolamide and elavil to decrease the pressure and treat the headaches.  I have been free of this medication for about 6 weeks now, NO HEADACHES.  The problem is that my cycle started on Saturday and I have been in bed every since.  I have severe abdominal pain on the right.  The pain is so severe that I limp.  It is oly relived by Tylenol extra strength.  I am scheduled to see my OB/GYN next week.  I am very concerned.  Last summer I went to the ER 2x with the same pain and they said that I just have painful periods.  This time, the pain is truy un-bearable. I am an avid runner and I can barely walk.  I have researched PCOS, and I have all of the signs.  I understand that birth control is a possible treatment for it.  However, I really do not want to have hormone therapy of any sort.  There is a history of Fibroids and breast cancer in my family.

Can I have some advice on how to cope until I see my OB/GYN; also, on what to expect?

Have you had an MRI of the brain? Before I was diagnosed with PCOS they suspected brain cancer, or pituitary adneomas, (sp?). I had a lot of the same symptoms, just get to an endocronologist or a neurologist... just do not ignore it. If you have HYPOglycemia... THINK before you take metformin.... I think you may want a different doctor to help you....

If you have a family history of fibroids, and you take metformin... you should again reconsider... metformin helps your hormones get in line which should increase estrogen, estrogen is a culprit in fibroids........

YOU NEED RESEARCH, lots of it and another doctor's opinion. Please do not take this lightly, if you live in the USA, you should know they love to just make a diagnosis, and usually do not care if it is exactly accurate.....

IT IS YOUR LIFE, YOUR HEALTH..... take control of it. Read I have spent probably 20 hours reading before each doctor appt. so I know exactly what I want to ask each visit... knowledge is empowering.

good luck

Just try and rest and keep your feet up. Does your doctor know your family history of Fibroids? You very well could have them or another type of cyst. My aunt had to go to the hoisptal because of her Fibroids. DO not let them brush you off as just having heavy periods. That happened to me so many times until I was finally told I have PCOS.
