PCOS

After 6 years of trying to get pregnant and a life time of messed up cycles (only 4 periods a year) I was finally diagnosed with PCOS today. I am 25 years old and I have been married for 7 years. I must say the news was bitter sweet, I have been to 6 ob/gyns and 2 fertility spec. and had ultrasounds in the past and all the doctors said I was fine. This doctor just did an exam and said you have PCOS, I was in shock! He followed up with an ultrasound and blood work to confirm and he was right. The wierd thing is that I don't really have any other symptoms to PCOS other then inferility and missed cycles. My wieght is normal, I have thick hair, and no wierd hair growth, and my blood pressure is always normal. He wan'ts to try me on Metformin, but I am nervous about taking it (I am very careful about what I put in to my body) because of my anxiety disorder (yah I am a mess). Does this medication really help? Has anyone had any bad side effects?

I agree with Beckyw but it makes me sick to my stomach. But I had my galbladder removed so that takes a play into it also.

Best of luck.

Metformin is a pretty common first treatment for PCOS. I've been on it for 5 months now. It made my stomach pretty upset at first, but the doctor forewarned be of that. Ever since I started taking it, for the first time in my life I have a completely normal cycles, without being on birth control! I started my first round of clomid about 2 weeks ago and we shall see here soon if we managed to make a baby or not. I also have a friend who was on metformin 3 months, 1 round clomid, then 2 rounds of clomid with artificial insemenation... she got pregnant with twins on the last round. SO, I know for us the metformin has certainly helped.

Best of luck!
