48 and waiting on blood test

Okay, I have one... I'll be 49 in Aug. my husband is going to be 67. We have an amazing daughter and are not trying to get pregnant. I'm on the pill, although my doctor changed it to a different one because I have major night sweats! I did miss a couple of days of the pill, but took it the next time. I've done that before with no problems. But here's the kicker, I'm late. Okay, maybe menopause I'm thinking, but just to be safe I took the pregnancy test, 4 of them. Two are negative!! But, two (the morning ones) are somewhat positive, not a clear positive though. The odds of me being pregnant are one in a billion! Can your hormones be so crazy that it can give out a somewhat positive home pregnancy test? I mean, I'm almost 49, major night sweats, and on the pill! Oh, and when I was working out this morning my heart rate jumped from 120 to 190  and back to 109 in 5 minutes. So now, I'm waiting on the blood tests to get back to me.

What's a "somewhat positive" pregnancy test?  One whose line is rather faint, or one that you had to wait a long time to see something on?  If you're testing according to the instructions (especially the instruction about only reading it in only the first x minutes) you can probably count on the test.

Hi,

no such thing as somewhat positive.  If the line came up in the recommended time, even if it's faint then it's positive.

If you are successfully pregnant maybe this is a really special child.  Stranger things have happened.

Let us know how you go!

I just wanted to update those who posted.... I'm the woman who is almost 49 and had two morning positive pregnancy tests. (even though I'm on the pill) I had a pregnancy test done at the doctors, and it came out negative. I had to go to another doctor for something else and talked to him about it, he said, due to changing the pill and my sweats... that my body could be going crazy and that is why I had a positive pregnancy test. I have to say I've taken the home test before and it worked great (I have an amazing daughter) This time my two positive tests were showing two strong lines in the recommended time, but one did not reach the top... it was slightly under the top, so I must be in menopause and my body is re-balancing itself, but boy did it throw my husband and I in a loop! And I just missed my second period... but I'm passing on the home pregnancy tests this time! I'll go with the doc's! Thanks all and all the best!! Jill

Hi Jill,

To be honest I have never heard of false positive for HPT, even during menopause.

I also went and researched on a HPT website. Here is what I found:-

Q: If your period stopped because of menopause will it give a false positive reading on test?

A: No. The hormone hCG is produced in pregnancy. While other hormones fluctuate as women approach menopause, hCG is not one of them.

Your doctor's test could have been a less sensitive one.  How did he test?  With urine, or with blood?  If it was with urine, it may not have been sensitive compared to the HPT. Even blood tests are not necessarily more sensitive than urine tests if they just used qualitative.

Given that you've now missed another period, please recheck with another HPT.  If it is still positive then you need to further confirm with your doctor (with a blood test).  In the meantime (until you are super sure you are not PG), do not do anything or take any medications that could be dangerous to a pregnancy.

Please let us know how you go.

Very best wishes

Just to let you know...that a friend of mine once went to the doctor's office 5 months in a row to be told that THIER tests said negative when her HPT's said POSITIVE! They finally did an ultrasound and found out that she was indeed 6 months pregnant!
So sometimes the doctor's tests CAN be wrong!
Hang in there, and ask for an ultrasound...just to be sure.
